How to talk to your AI girlfriend: first messages, habits and boundaries

To talk to your AI girlfriend well, write to her the way you would text someone you are getting to know: give her specific details to react to, ask questions back and steer with a short note in brackets when the chat drifts. What you send shapes her replies more than the app does, although the 31 apps we track differ a lot in memory and voice.

What to say in your first few messages

The first messages set the tone the model copies for the rest of the chat. Three things help most:

  1. Tell her who you are. A first name (or nickname), what you do and one thing you care about. Keep it to facts you are happy for a company to store.
  2. Tell her what you want from the chat. Daily company, flirting, a story or practice at small talk. She cannot guess.
  3. Ask her something. A question about her day or her life gives her a chance to show her personality.

A first message that works in almost any app:

Hey, I'm Sam. I work in logistics, which is less exciting than it sounds, and I'm trying to get back into running. I mostly want someone fun to talk to in the evenings. So tell me: what did you get up to today?

If you need more ideas, our list of 60 AI girlfriend conversation starters is grouped by mood.

12 habits that make the conversation better

  1. Be specific. "I burnt dinner and the smoke alarm went off" beats "bad day".
  2. Ask questions back. Chats where only she asks questions feel like interviews.
  3. Pick up her details. If she mentions a sister or a trip, ask about it later.
  4. Vary your length. She mirrors you, so one-word messages get short, flat replies.
  5. Tell stories, not summaries. A small scene gives her more to react to than a list.
  6. Say how you feel. "I'm nervous about tomorrow" lets her respond to the mood, not only the facts.
  7. Give time cues. "It's late here" or "just woke up" makes her replies fit the moment.
  8. Let her disagree. If she agrees with everything, ask her opinion and push back.
  9. Use her name now and then. It keeps the model anchored on the character.
  10. Recap after a break. One line about what you last talked about helps her memory.
  11. Rate replies. Where the app has thumbs up and down, use them. Nomi AI says its companions learn from this kind of feedback.
  12. End on something open. A question or a plan gives the next reply somewhere to go.

How to steer when she goes off track

Every AI girlfriend slips sometimes: she repeats herself, forgets a fact, sounds like an assistant or takes a story somewhere you did not want. Arguing in character rarely fixes it. These do:

  • Regenerate the reply. Most apps have a swipe or retry button. A fresh reply keeps the mistake out of the chat history, so the model does not build on it.
  • Use an out-of-character note. "(OOC: you're Maya, you're relaxed, keep replies short)" in brackets works in most apps.
  • Edit her message. Some apps let you edit replies. Fixing a wrong fact in place is better than correcting it later.
  • Fix the character, not the chat. If the same problem keeps coming back, change her personality or rules field. Our personality prompts include fixes for flat or repetitive characters.

Texting, voice messages and live calls

Text is where every app is strongest. 28 of the 31 apps we track also send voice messages, and 15 offer live calls where she hears you and answers in real time.

Calls change how you talk. Keep sentences short, pause after questions and give her one topic at a time, because speech recognition struggles with long, rambling turns. Games and storytelling work well by voice; long factual exchanges work better in text. Calls usually cost more too: OurDream and Secrets AI both list 50 of their in-app coins per minute of a voice call. Our ranking of AI girlfriend apps with voice calls compares them.

What not to share with your AI girlfriend

She feels private, but the chat is stored on a company's servers, and several apps say flagged conversations can be reviewed by staff. Candy AI's privacy notice says chats are scanned by its own moderation system with possible manual review of flagged content, and Lovescape says human review follows three or more violations. Leave these out:

  • Your full name, home address, workplace or school.
  • Passwords, card numbers or ID documents.
  • Photos of yourself or of other real people.
  • Secrets about other people that could identify them.

Our guide to whether AI girlfriend apps read your chats goes through what each company says it does with your messages.

Keeping it healthy

An AI girlfriend is always available and always agreeable, which is part of the appeal and part of the risk. A few habits keep it in proportion: decide when you will chat rather than opening the app whenever you are bored, keep plans with real friends, and notice if you spend more on tokens than you meant to. She is not a therapist, however supportive she sounds.

If chatting starts to crowd out sleep, work or people, our guide to AI girlfriend addiction covers the warning signs. For apps that are strongest at plain conversation, see our ranking of AI girlfriend chat apps.

Frequently asked questions

How do I talk to my AI girlfriend?

Write to her like someone you are getting to know: share specific details, ask questions back and follow up on things she mentions. Steer with a short note in brackets if the chat drifts, and regenerate replies you do not like instead of arguing.

What should I say to my AI girlfriend first?

Tell her your first name, one or two things about your life and what you want from the chat, then ask her a question. That gives the model a clear starting point and shows it the tone you want.

Why are my AI girlfriend's replies boring?

Usually because your messages are short or generic, or her character description is thin. Send details she can react to, vary your message length and give her opinions and a speech style in her personality field.

Can my AI girlfriend hear me?

Only in apps with voice features. 15 of the 31 apps we track offer live calls where she hears you and replies by voice, and 28 send recorded voice messages. The rest are text only.

Is it safe to tell my AI girlfriend personal things?

Share feelings and everyday details if you like, but not identifying information such as your full name, address, employer or photos of real people. Chats are stored by the company, and some apps say flagged conversations can be reviewed by staff.
