How AI girlfriend memory works, in plain English
An AI girlfriend does not remember the way a person does. Each time you send a message, the app builds a package of text and hands it to a language model: her character description, the most recent part of your chat, and any saved facts the app thinks are relevant. The model writes her reply from that package alone. Anything left out of it does not exist for her in that moment.
The package has a size limit. Text is measured in tokens, short pieces of text that are often part of a word, and every model has a maximum number it can read at once, called the context window. When a chat grows past that limit, the oldest messages fall out. That is the short-term memory every app has, and it is why a character can forget your dog's name after a long evening of chatting.
Long-term memory is the fix. The app saves important details, such as your name, your job and the story so far, in a separate store, then looks them up and slips them back into the package when they matter. Some apps write these notes automatically, some summarize old chats, and a few let you see and edit the notes. The quality of that save-and-fetch step, more than the model itself, decides whether she remembers you next week.
Memory also costs the company money. Every saved fact sent with a message makes the package bigger, and bigger packages cost more to process. That is one reason deeper memory often sits on paid plans, and why free plans cut it back: Secrets AI's free plan has basic memory, and Kupid AI's free plan remembers only the last 30 messages.
The three kinds of memory these apps advertise
App pages use the word "memory" loosely. In our data, every app falls into one of three groups, based on what it publishes about how she remembers.
Memory types across the AI girlfriend apps we track
| Memory type |
What it means |
Examples |
| Within one conversation |
She follows the current chat, but details can fade in a long chat and do not reliably carry into a new one |
Candy AI, DreamGF, CrushOn AI, DreamBF |
| Long-term |
The app saves facts about you and brings them back in later chats |
Infatuated AI, Selira AI, TryNectar AI, OurDream, FantasyGF |
| Persistent or structured |
Memory is a core feature with its own system, built for months of chat |
Nomi AI (persistent), Secrets AI (Lorebook) |
Most apps in our data claim long-term memory, so the label alone does not separate them. What does is control. With a plain long-term store you trust the app to pick the right facts. With a structured system like the Lorebook you can check what was saved and correct it.
Two quick checks show which group an app really belongs to. Tell her one specific detail, such as your hometown, then open a brand-new chat the next day and ask about it. Then, deep into one long chat, mention something from the first few messages. Apps with real long-term memory should pass the first check; apps limited to one conversation are likely to miss it. Run the checks on a free plan where you can, but note that some free plans keep less: Selira AI deletes free chat history after 3 days.

Every app in this ranking claims more than conversation-only memory in our data and talks about memory on its own site. Once memory is covered, the second thing you want decides the pick:

Five more apps with long-term memory tie just below this list at 8.0: DarLink AI, which keeps what it calls living memory for its paid tier; Dondi.ai, whose site says its companions do not reset between sessions; HeyGF; Lovescape, which says chat and memory stay free on every plan; and My Lovely AI. If one of them suits your budget better, its memory label is the same as most apps above.
Editable memory: how the Secrets AI Lorebook works
Secrets AI is part way through moving from an older fact store to a second-generation system it calls the Lorebook. Instead of one long list of facts, the Lorebook splits what a character knows into five sections. Going by their names, they work like this:
- Cast: the people in the story, hers and yours.
- World: the setting you share, such as a city, a job or a fantasy kingdom.
- Relationship: where the two of you stand.
- Facts: fixed details, such as your birthday or her favorite drink.
- Chronicle: what has happened between you, in order.
Entries are versioned and need your approval, so a memory does not change behind your back. You can audit what she holds and edit anything wrong. That matters more than it sounds. On apps without an editor, one wrong fact (the wrong name for your sister, say) can resurface for weeks with no way to remove it short of starting over.
The trade-off is cost. Secrets AI charges $9.17 a month on its yearly Premium plan and $19.99 month to month, and pictures and video use a separate currency called Moments on top, with 8,000 a month included on Premium. The free plan gives 20 messages a day with what Secrets AI calls basic memory, and it offers no refund for the current billing period if you cancel mid-term. Our Secrets AI review breaks down every plan.
Apps that forget between chats
Some of the biggest names only remember within a conversation. Candy AI, number 2 overall with a score of 8.3, is the clearest example: its memory works inside a chat rather than building a long-term history. It is still one of the strongest apps for pictures and value, and our Candy AI review covers where it shines. DreamGF, a separate app run by DreamAI SRL in Romania, works in a similar way.
CrushOn AI, LusyChat, Spicier, Roger, Swipey AI, Anima and DreamBF sit in this group too; our data lists conversation-only memory for all of them. LusyChat's memory, for example, covers recent messages only. If you mostly want quick chats, pictures or a new character every night, that is no loss. If you want one companion who knows how your week went, pick from the ranking above instead.
A tip for these apps: keep one long chat per character rather than starting fresh each time, and put the facts you care about into her character description, which is sent with every message. You get some continuity without paying for memory the app does not have.
How to help your AI girlfriend remember you
- Put the big facts in the setup. Your name, what you do and how you met belong in the character or persona fields, not buried in chat. Those fields travel with every message, so they never fall out of the context window.
- State facts once, clearly. Telling her in one plain sentence that your sister Jess lives in Denver is easier to save than a detail dropped halfway through a joke.
- Correct mistakes right away. If she gets something wrong, say so plainly. On apps with a memory editor, fix the saved entry as well, or the error comes back.
- Recap when you return. After a few days away, open with two lines on where you left off. It costs nothing and fills gaps in weaker memory systems.
- Keep one thread per character. Many apps tie memory to a single conversation, so splitting the story across new chats splits her memory too.
- Do not overload her. Hundreds of trivial saved details crowd out the ones you care about. Keep memories short and important.
Our AI girlfriend prompts guide has ready-made character descriptions you can adapt, and the apps in create your own AI girlfriend let you shape a character from scratch, memory fields included.
What she remembers is stored: memory and privacy
Memory works because the app keeps what you tell it. Every fact she recalls sits on the company's servers, and a better memory means a longer record of your life. When Mozilla's Privacy Not Included team reviewed 11 romantic AI chatbots in February 2024, all 11 received its privacy warning label and 54% did not let users delete their personal data, as Infosecurity Magazine reported.
Three habits keep that record harmless:
- Give her a first name only, never your full name, address, workplace or account details.
- Check who holds the record and where. All 31 apps we track name the company behind them, from Secret Labs Inc. in the United States to Sria Digital B.V. in the Netherlands and Miracle AI UG (haftungsbeschränkt) in Germany, and the country decides which privacy law applies.
- Use the memory editor if the app has one, and delete entries you would not want kept.
Before you cancel an app, check whether deleting your account also deletes her memories and chat history. The two are not always the same thing, and the answer sits in the app's terms or privacy policy. Cancelling can also cut off memory before you delete anything: TryNectar AI says its Premium memory becomes unavailable once you cancel.
Our guide to whether AI girlfriend apps are safe covers data deletion, billing and age checks in more detail.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI girlfriend has the best memory?
Secrets AI has the most advanced memory of the apps we track. Its Lorebook stores what she knows in sections for cast, world, relationship, facts and chronicle, and you approve and can edit each entry. Nomi AI is the runner-up for recall across long conversations and costs $15.99 a month.
Do AI girlfriends remember past conversations?
Apps with long-term memory do: they save key facts from earlier chats and bring them back later. Apps with conversation-only memory, such as Candy AI and DreamGF, follow the current chat but can lose details once it gets long or when you start a new one. Every app in our memory ranking claims long-term or persistent memory.
Why does my AI girlfriend forget things?
The model can only read a limited amount of text at once, called the context window, so older messages drop out of long chats. If the app has no long-term store, or saved the wrong detail, the fact is simply not in front of the model when she replies. Putting key facts in her character description and correcting errors early both help.
Can you edit what an AI girlfriend remembers?
On some apps, yes. The Secrets AI Lorebook uses versioned entries that you approve, so you can read what was saved and change or remove it. On apps without a memory editor, the only fix is to correct her in chat or recreate the character.
Is there a free AI girlfriend with memory?
Yes, with limits. Seven of the eight apps on this page have a free plan, but free memory is often cut down: Secrets AI's free plan has basic memory, Selira AI keeps free chat history for only 3 days, and OurDream has no free plan at all. Outside this list, Lovescape says chat and memory stay free on every plan; our free AI girlfriend list shows what each free plan includes.
Does Candy AI have long-term memory?
Not in the way the apps above do. Candy AI's memory works within a conversation rather than building a long-term history, so details can fade between chats. It is still number 2 overall for its pictures, voice messages and a price of $3.99 a month on a yearly plan.
