The four tools that make AI roleplay work

Every app here can hold a conversation. What separates a good roleplay app is the set of tools around the chat. Our data tracks four of them:

• Scenarios. A starting situation that sets the place, the time and what just happened, so her first reply already has a plot.
• Personas. A profile for you: your name, look, role and backstory. Without one, the character has to guess who she is talking to.
• Group chat. More than one AI character in the same conversation, for rivals, friends or a whole cast.
• Memory. Long stories need the app to keep track of what happened chapters ago.

Only apps with both scenarios and personas made this ranking, and among those the order follows our overall score. Five apps tie on score at the bottom of the list, which is why it runs to twelve. That rule left out some big names. Candy AI has scenarios but no persona feature in our data, and Nomi AI has group chats and strong memory but no scenario or persona tools, so both are better picks for other things than for plotted roleplay.

Group chat roleplay: apps that let you add characters

Group chat turns a two-person chat into a scene. You can put your girlfriend and her best friend in one conversation, stage a double date, or run a story with a villain who speaks for himself. In this ranking, four apps have it: Secrets AI, OurDream, Selira AI and TryNectar AI.

Outside this ranking, Nomi AI and CrushOn AI also have group chats. CrushOn leans on a very large community library, so there are characters for most scene ideas, but because nearly all of them are user-made, quality varies a lot. It starts at $5.99 a month.

A few tips for group scenes:

• Give each character a clearly different voice in their description, or their replies start to blur together.
• Name who you are talking to at the start of a message when the scene gets busy.
• Keep groups small. Two or three AI characters plus you is far easier for the model to track than six.
• Give the group a shared reason to be together, such as a trip or a job, so the characters talk to each other and not only to you.

How to write a roleplay scenario that works

A strong scenario answers four questions in a few lines: where are you, who is she to you, what just happened, and what does she want right now. Here is an example you can adapt:

Setting: A small bookshop in Portland on a rainy Friday, ten minutes before closing.
Relationship: Maya owns the shop. You have come in every week for a month and never asked her name.
What just happened: The power went out, and the two of you are the only ones left inside.
What she wants: To keep you talking until the rain stops, without admitting why.

Then fill in your persona so she knows who she is talking to:

Name: Alex. Age 29. Works nights as a nurse. Quiet at first, dry sense of humor. Has been meaning to ask Maya out for weeks.

Three rules keep a scenario from falling flat. Give her a goal, because a character who wants something drives the story instead of waiting for you. Leave the ending open, so the model has room to surprise you. And write in the style you want back: if you set the scene in the present tense with short lines, replies tend to follow. Memory decides how long a story can run

A roleplay that lasts one evening needs almost no memory. A story that runs for weeks needs a lot of it: names, places, promises, the argument in chapter two. When the chat outgrows what the model can read at once, early events drop away and characters start contradicting the plot.

That is why memory type matters more for roleplay than for casual chat. Every app in this ranking claims long-term memory, which saves key facts across chats. Secrets AI goes further. Its Lorebook splits memory into cast, world, relationship, facts and chronicle, which maps neatly onto how a story is built, and you approve and can edit each entry. If a plot point gets saved wrong, you fix it once instead of fighting it every scene.

Two plan details affect long stories. TryNectar AI says its Premium memory becomes unavailable if you cancel, so a paused subscription can pause the story too. Text roleplay is the cheap part. Plans cover chat, and your spend grows when you ask for a picture of a scene, a video clip or a voice call, which use tokens or credits. If your stories lean on pictures, budget for extras on top of the plan.

Apps that are weaker for roleplay, and why

Some popular apps fall short on roleplay tools even though they chat well:

• Kupid AI and SweetDream AI have personas but no scenario feature, so you set every scene by hand in chat.

None of this makes these apps bad. It means you do more of the setup yourself, usually by writing the scene into your first message and repeating key details as the story goes. Ground rules for AI roleplay

Roleplay apps give you a lot of freedom, but a few limits apply everywhere. Every app here is for adults only, and characters in any romantic or explicit scene must be adults too. Some platforms build checks for this into the product: Secrets AI, for example, treats age verification, consent verification and moderation review as core parts of its platform.

Do not base characters on real people you know, and do not paste private details about anyone into a story. Everything you write is stored on the company's servers, often including the memory notes about your plot. It also helps to decide your own limits before a long story starts, since the model follows your lead.
