AI girlfriend statistics for 2026: prices, features and who uses them

Our dataset

We track 31 AI girlfriend apps and re-check each app's own pricing, feature and terms pages every month. The table below is the September 2026 snapshot. Every figure is computed from that data, so it updates when an app changes its prices or features. The methodology explains what counts as a feature and how we score apps.

Medians use only the apps that publish that price: 28 publish a cheapest plan and 26 publish a month-to-month price.

Three findings matter most for buyers. 97% of apps have a free plan, so you can try most of them before paying. Month to month costs a median of 2.2 times the cheapest advertised plan, so the headline price assumes you commit for a year. And 3 of the 31 apps have a native iPhone app and 5 a native Android app; the rest run in the browser, where you can add them to your home screen. App store rules help explain that: Apple's guidelines bar overtly sexual or pornographic material, and Google Play does not allow apps that contain or promote sexual content.

AI girlfriend price statistics

The median cheapest plan across the apps that publish one is $7.75 a month. That is usually a yearly plan paid up front. The median month-to-month price is $14.99.

Among the 26 apps that publish both a discounted plan and a higher month-to-month price, paying month to month costs a median of 2.2 times as much per month. Put another way, a year on the cheapest plan costs the same as about 6 months of month-to-month billing.

The spread is wide. The lowest published price in our data is Selira AI at $3.60 a month and the highest is Kupid AI at $14.92 a month. Grouped by cheapest plan:

• Under $5 a month: Selira AI ($3.60), Candy AI ($3.99) and Replika ($4.17).
• $5 to $7 a month: TryNectar AI ($5), FantasyGF ($5.83), DreamGF ($5.83), Muah AI ($5.83), DreamBF.ai ($5.83), My Dream Companion ($5.84), Dondi.ai ($5.99), CrushOn AI ($5.99), My Lovely AI ($6) and Infatuated AI ($6.99).
• $7 to $10 a month: Roger ($7.50), Lovescape ($7.99), LusyChat ($7.99), Spicier ($7.99), Swipey AI ($7.99), Nomi AI ($8.33), HeyGF ($8.33), AI Peeps ($8.99), Secrets AI ($9.17), OurDream ($9.99) and GoLove AI ($9.99).
• $10 a month or more: Kindroid ($11.67), GirlfriendGPT ($12), SweetDream AI ($14.92) and Kupid AI ($14.92).

AI girlfriend feature statistics

30 of the 31 apps (97%) generate pictures of your character, and 28 (90%) send voice messages. Video clips are offered by 24 apps (77%).

Live voice calls are less common. 15 apps (48%) let the character call you and talk in real time; the rest stop at recorded voice notes or text. Our lists of AI girlfriends with voice calls and AI girlfriend video apps rank the apps that have them.

27 apps (87%) let you build a character from scratch. The least common feature is group chat, offered by 7 apps. On content, 29 apps (94%) allow 18+ chat once you confirm your age; the exceptions in our data are Replika and Anima.

21 apps (68%) meter pictures, video or calls with an in-app currency, under names such as Moments, Tokens, Credits, Dream Coins and Coins.

AI companion market size and spending

App intelligence firm Appfigures tracks spending on AI companion apps in the Apple App Store and Google Play. Its figures, reported by TechCrunch and Decrypt, are the most detailed public numbers:

• AI companion apps earned $82 million in the first half of 2025 and were on track for more than $120 million for the year, with revenue up 64% on the same period of 2024.
• Appfigures counted 337 active, revenue-generating AI companion apps worldwide in mid-2025, 128 of them released that year, with 220 million lifetime downloads.
• The market is concentrated: the top 10% of companion apps took 89% of the revenue, and 17% of active companion apps had "girlfriend" in their name.
• Revenue per download rose from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025.
• In the first half of 2026, 214 NSFW and romance-focused AI apps took $162.8 million in consumer spending, about the same as general-purpose companion apps ($164.8 million) despite having roughly half the downloads.
• Romance and NSFW companion apps have taken $427.3 million in total since late 2022, across 165.3 million downloads.

These figures cover app store spending only. Many AI girlfriend services sell subscriptions directly on their websites, which app store data does not capture, so the numbers above understate total spending on the category.

How many people use AI girlfriends

The numbers differ because the questions do. Having chatted with an AI partner at least once is common, especially among young men; calling it a relationship is rare. Men use them more: in the Wheatley data, 31% of young men versus 23% of young women, and 15% versus 10% among adults over 30.

The teen figure matters for age checks. Every app we track is 18+, and Common Sense Media recommends that no one under 18 use AI companions.

Loneliness and well-being research

• About one in two US adults reported loneliness even before the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the US Surgeon General's 2023 advisory, which compared the mortality risk of lacking connection to smoking daily.
• In a study of 1,006 student Replika users published in npj Mental Health Research in 2024, 90% experienced loneliness and 3% (30 people) said the app halted their suicidal ideation.
• Harvard Business School researchers found that a 15-minute chat with an AI companion reduced loneliness on par with talking to a person, but the relief did not build up over a week of daily chats.
• A four-week MIT Media Lab study of 981 participants found that heavier voluntary chatbot use went with more loneliness, more emotional dependence and less socializing.
• In the Wheatley Institute survey, more than half of men who used AI for romantic or sexual purposes reported depression risk and high loneliness, nearly double the rate of non-users, and over 60% of women users reported depression risk.

The research points both ways. Short chats can make people feel heard, while heavy use tracks with worse well-being. None of these studies prove that the apps cause loneliness; lonely people may simply use them more.

Attitudes: relationships, cheating and privacy

• 50% of Americans say AI will make people worse at forming meaningful relationships and 5% say better, according to Pew Research Center (5,023 adults, June 2025). Among adults under 30, 58% say worse.
• In the 2025 Singles in America study, 40% of singles said having an AI partner while in a relationship counts as cheating; 41% said none of the AI behaviors asked about would count.
• Among 18 to 30 year olds in relationships, about a third told Wheatley and IFS researchers that AI companion use is cheating, 4 in 10 said it is not and 28% were neutral. 69% of regular users said it was important that their partner not learn the full extent of their use.
• On privacy, Mozilla found that 90% of the romantic chatbots it reviewed may share or sell personal data and 54% did not give every user the right to delete it.
