Is having an AI girlfriend cheating? What the surveys show and how couples decide

Whether having an AI girlfriend is cheating depends on the rules of your relationship, but many people would count it: 40% of US singles in Match's 2025 Singles in America study said an AI partner is cheating, and about a third of partnered 18 to 30 year olds in a 2026 Wheatley Institute survey agreed. What most people object to is secrecy, sexual chat and emotional closeness, not the app itself.

What the surveys say

No survey settles the question, but several large ones ask it directly, and they land in a similar place: a sizeable minority says yes, a similar share says no, and many are unsure.

Is an AI girlfriend cheating? Survey results
Source Who was asked Finding
Match Singles in America, 2025 5,001 US singles 40% say having an AI partner while in an exclusive relationship is cheating; 39% say sexual chats with AI are a no-no and 38% say the same of emotionally intimate conversations; 41% say none of these count
Wheatley Institute and IFS, 2026 2,431 US adults aged 18 to 30 who are dating, engaged or married About a third consider AI companion use cheating, 4 in 10 disagree and 28% are neutral; 37% say using a romantic AI companion while married is acceptable
YouGov, Oct 2025 5,484 US adults 61% say they definitely could not form a deep emotional bond with an AI chatbot companion; 1% say they already have
Pew Research Center, 2025 5,023 US adults 50% say AI will make people worse at forming meaningful relationships; 5% say better

So roughly one person in three to four in ten would see an AI girlfriend as cheating. If your partner is in that group, the label matters less than the hurt. More survey data is on our AI girlfriend statistics page.

Use is highest among younger adults. In the Match study, 33% of Gen Z singles had engaged with AI as a romantic companion, against 16% of all singles, and in the Wheatley data young men were generally about 5% more likely than young women to engage with an AI companion. So the question is most likely to come up in younger couples, often when one partner uses these apps and the other does not.

Where people draw the line

People who answer "it depends" usually mean one of three things.

Sexual content

For many, 18+ chat or explicit roleplay is the line, because it looks like sexting someone else even if nobody is on the other end. Most AI girlfriend apps allow it (29 of the 31 in our data), so for most users this is a live question, not an edge case.

Emotional intimacy

Others worry more about feelings: telling the AI things you do not tell your partner, turning to it after an argument, or saying "I love you" and meaning it. In the Wheatley survey, 68% of regular users said it was easier to talk to their AI companion about their feelings than to real people, and 50% wished their real-life partner behaved more like their AI companion.

Secrecy, time and money

The third view says the app is fine and hiding it is the betrayal. The same goes for hours spent in the app instead of with your partner, or money spent on tokens from a shared budget.

These are the same three lines people use for affairs with other humans: physical, emotional and hidden. If you and your partner already agree on what counts as cheating with a person, that agreement is the best starting point for an AI companion too.

Secrecy is what the research flags most

The strongest finding in the 2026 Secret Soulmates report from the Wheatley Institute and the Institute for Family Studies is not how many people use AI romantic companions but how many hide it. Among 2,431 young adults who were dating, engaged or married:

  • 1 in 7 (15%) regularly interacted with an AI romantic companion, and another third (34%) had used one at some point.
  • 30% of users said their partner had no knowledge of it, 11% said their partner was only somewhat aware and 14% said mostly but not fully aware.
  • Where partners did know, users estimated the partner knew about only 37% of their actual use.
  • 69% said it was somewhat or extremely important that their partner not learn the full extent of it.

The report's authors argue that this kind of hidden use makes real-life relationships less stable. Whatever your view on AI companions, hiding one is the part most likely to feel like a betrayal when it comes out.

When an AI girlfriend is more likely to hurt a relationship

Using an AI companion does not automatically damage a relationship, but some patterns are warning signs:

  • You hide the app, clear the chat history or use it only when your partner is asleep.
  • You compare your partner to the AI, or wish they were more like it.
  • You turn to the AI instead of your partner after an argument or bad news.
  • You spend money on tokens or upgrades that you would not want to explain.
  • Time in the app is replacing time together, sleep or friends.

Research on heavy use backs up the last point. A four-week MIT Media Lab study of 981 people found that those who chose to use a chatbot more reported more loneliness and less real-world socializing. If spending is part of the problem, our AI girlfriend cost guide shows what the apps really charge each month.

How to talk to your partner about an AI girlfriend

  1. Bring it up before they find it. Discovery turns a conversation about an app into one about trust.
  2. Explain what you use it for. Company when you are apart, practice, a story or 18+ fantasy: be honest, because the answer changes how your partner will feel.
  3. Ask where their line is. Sexual chat, pet names, daily use and spending are all fair to discuss. Do not assume their line matches yours.
  4. Offer to show them. Worries often shrink once people see what the app actually does. Sometimes they do not, and that is useful to know too.
  5. Agree on rules and revisit them. For example: no explicit chat, no spending over a set amount, or none of it while you are both home.
  6. Be ready to stop. If it is causing real pain, canceling takes a few minutes. Our guide on how to cancel an AI girlfriend subscription covers every payment method.

If you are single

If you are not in a relationship, there is nobody to cheat on. An AI girlfriend is then closer to a video game or a romance novel: entertainment, company or a way to practice conversation. Our guide to what an AI girlfriend is explains how the apps work.

Two things are still worth keeping in mind. First, future partners may have views: in the Singles in America data, 40% of singles would count an AI partner as cheating once a relationship is exclusive, so it is worth mentioning early. Second, research suggests AI chat helps in the moment but does not replace people. Harvard Business School researchers found the relief from a daily 15-minute chat with an AI companion did not build up over a week.

Setting boundaries inside the app

If you and your partner agree that some use is fine, the app itself can help keep it within those lines:

  • Write the character as a friend. In apps with a character builder (27 of the 31 we track), the relationship description decides whether she acts as a girlfriend, a friend or a practice partner. Our AI girlfriend prompt guide has templates you can adapt.
  • Turn off notifications so the app does not pull you in at dinner or late at night.
  • Cap spending. Stay on a basic plan and skip token packs, or pay with a card that has a limit.
  • Agree on a time window, such as a commute or a trip when you are apart.

If your partner is curious rather than worried, many of the same apps offer male characters too. Our list of AI boyfriend apps covers them.

Frequently asked questions

Is it cheating to have an AI girlfriend?

It is cheating if it breaks the rules you and your partner have agreed on, and many people would say it does. In Match's 2025 Singles in America study, 40% of US singles said having an AI partner while in an exclusive relationship is cheating. Assume your partner may see it that way until you have talked about it.

Is sexting an AI cheating?

Many people think so. In the 2025 Singles in America study, 39% of singles said sexual chats with AI would be a no-no in an exclusive relationship. Because most AI girlfriend apps allow 18+ chat, it is worth agreeing on this line with your partner explicitly.

Is an emotional relationship with an AI cheating?

For some people, emotional intimacy matters more than sexual content: 38% of singles in the 2025 Singles in America study objected to emotionally intimate conversations with AI. Signs it may cross a line include confiding in the AI instead of your partner, comparing your partner to it, or keeping it secret.

Should I tell my partner I use an AI girlfriend app?

Yes, before they find out another way. In a 2026 survey of young adults in relationships, 30% of AI companion users said their partner had no idea, and hidden use is the part partners are most likely to see as a betrayal.

Can an AI girlfriend ruin a relationship?

It can if it replaces time, intimacy or honesty with your partner. The Wheatley Institute and IFS researchers link secret AI companion use to less stable real-life relationships. Used openly and within limits you both agree on, it is far less likely to cause harm.

How many people in relationships use AI girlfriends?

In a 2026 survey of 2,431 US adults aged 18 to 30 who were dating, engaged or married, 15% said they regularly interact with an AI romantic companion and another 34% had used one at some point. Men were somewhat more likely to use them than women.
