Why are AI girlfriends so popular? Six reasons, with the numbers behind them

AI girlfriends are popular because loneliness is common, the AI has become convincing and the apps are cheap and always available: about half of US adults reported loneliness even before the pandemic, and in a 2025 study people judged an AI to be the human 73% of the time. Spending shows the demand, with romance and 18+ companion apps taking $162.8 million in app store spending in the first half of 2026.

Reason 1: loneliness is widespread

The US Surgeon General's 2023 advisory said about one in two US adults reported loneliness even before the COVID-19 pandemic, and called lacking connection a risk to health comparable to smoking daily. An app that answers within seconds at 2 a.m. meets a real need.

AI companion users are lonelier than average. In a study of 1,006 student Replika users, 90% reported loneliness, well above the rate in typical student samples. And the relief is real in the short term: Harvard Business School researchers found a 15-minute AI chat eased loneliness about as much as talking to a person, mainly because people felt heard.

Reason 2: the AI got good enough to feel real

Early chatbots were easy to spot. Today's are not. In a 2025 UC San Diego study, people chatted for five minutes with a human and an AI at the same time and then picked which was human. When told to adopt a humanlike persona, GPT-4.5 was judged to be the human 73% of the time, more often than the real person.

The FTC put it plainly when it opened its companion chatbot inquiry in 2025: AI chatbots "can effectively mimic human characteristics, emotions, and intentions" and are designed to talk like a friend or confidant. Add memory, pictures and voice, and the illusion holds for longer. 30 of the 31 apps we track send pictures and 15 offer live voice calls. Our list of realistic AI girlfriend apps ranks the most convincing ones.

Reason 3: no judgment and no rejection

Many users say the point is how easy it feels. In the Wheatley Institute survey, 42% of respondents agreed that AI programs are easier to talk to than real people. Among young adults in relationships who regularly use an AI romantic companion, 68% said it was easier to talk to their AI about their feelings than to real people, and 65% said it was easier to be themselves.

Match found the same pattern among singles: 45% of those who had used an AI partner said it made them feel more understood. An AI girlfriend never gets tired, never brings her own bad day and never says no to a conversation. That is the appeal, and also the reason researchers worry about heavy use.

Reason 4: cheap, instant and always on

The barrier to entry is close to zero. 30 of the 31 apps we track have a free plan, and some let you start without an account: Secrets AI lets guests chat before signing up. The median cheapest paid plan is $7.75 a month.

Most apps also run in any browser, so there is nothing to install and no app store listing on your phone. Only 3 of the 31 apps we track have a native iPhone app, and the rest work as web apps you can add to your home screen. Our list of free AI girlfriend apps shows what each free plan includes.

Reasons 5 and 6: 18+ content and heavy advertising

Adult content is a big part of the category. 29 of the 31 apps we track allow 18+ chat once you confirm your age, and in the Wheatley survey 14% of young adult men said they used AI companions for sexual purposes. Roleplay matters too: 21 apps offer ready-made story scenarios, which our AI girlfriend roleplay page covers.

Marketing has done the rest. A 2024 Wired investigation, reported by Fox Business, found more than 29,000 ads for AI girlfriend apps in Meta's ad library, which Wired said appeared to break Meta's own adult content rules. Appfigures found that revenue per download for companion apps more than doubled, from $0.52 in 2024 to $1.18 in 2025, which gives companies money to keep advertising. Our guide to how AI girlfriend apps make money explains the business model.

Frequently asked questions

Why do people have AI girlfriends?

The most common reasons are loneliness, curiosity, entertainment, practice at conversation and 18+ roleplay without involving a real person. In one survey, 42% of respondents said AI is easier to talk to than real people, which is a large part of the appeal.

Are AI girlfriends becoming more popular?

Yes. Appfigures found AI companion app revenue grew 64% in the first half of 2025 against the same period of 2024, and romance and 18+ companion apps took $162.8 million in app store spending in the first half of 2026.

Who uses AI girlfriends the most?

Young men, by a modest margin. The Wheatley Institute found 31% of men and 23% of women aged 18 to 30 had chatted with an AI romantic partner, against 15% and 10% of adults over 30.

Are AI girlfriends taking over?

No. Trying one is common, but only 1% of US adults told YouGov in October 2025 they already have a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot, and 81% said they definitely could not. Most use is occasional and alongside real relationships.

Why are AI girlfriends bad?

They are not bad in themselves, but heavy use is linked to more loneliness and emotional dependence, many apps store and may share intimate data, and some use emotional tactics to keep you chatting. Using one with a budget and time limits avoids most of the harm.
