AI girlfriend trends in 2026: what is changing in apps, prices and rules

The biggest AI girlfriend trends in 2026 are growing spending, video and live voice spreading across apps, age checks becoming normal and new laws requiring AI disclosure and protections for minors. Romance and NSFW companion apps took $162.8 million in app store spending in the first half of 2026, and of the 31 apps we track, 24 now make video clips and 15 offer live calls.

1. Spending keeps growing

Appfigures, via Decrypt, counted 214 romance and NSFW companion apps that took $162.8 million in the first half of 2026, about level with general-purpose companion apps at $164.8 million, and $427.3 million since late 2022. The top earner, Zeta, made $33 million in six months. A year earlier, all AI companion apps together had made $82 million in the first half of 2025, from 60 million downloads that were up 88% on the year before, and revenue per download had risen from $0.52 to $1.18. People are not only trying these apps; more of them are paying.

These figures cover app stores only. Most AI girlfriend apps sell on the web, so the real total is higher. Our guide to how AI girlfriend apps make money explains where it comes from.

2. Video and live voice become standard

Text chat is no longer the product; it is the baseline. In our data, 30 of 31 apps send pictures, 24 make video clips, 28 send voice messages and 15 offer live calls. Video is also the most expensive feature: OurDream lists 100 dreamcoins per 5 seconds of video, against 5 for an in-chat picture.

Live calls are usually metered by the minute in each app's own currency: Secrets AI and OurDream each list 50 coins a minute, DreamGF 7 tokens and SweetDream AI 3 tokens, so the real cost depends on each app's pack prices. Our rankings of AI girlfriend video apps and AI girlfriends with voice calls compare the apps that offer them.

3. Age checks and new laws

Age verification is spreading from the UK, where it has been required for pornographic content since July 2025, to Australia, whose codes took effect on 9 March 2026. 13 of the 31 apps we track now say they use a third-party face or ID check at least where the law requires it.

Disclosure laws are arriving at the same time. California's SB 243 took effect on 1 January 2026, New York's companion law in November 2025, the EU AI Act's rule that people must be told they are talking to AI on 2 August 2026, and China's rules for human-like AI on 15 July 2026. Our guides to age verification and AI girlfriend laws by country cover the detail.

4. Big tech steps in, and back

  • xAI. Grok's companions, launched in July 2025, lifted downloads by 40% to 171,000 a day, though revenue rose only 9%. In January 2026 Common Sense Media called Grok "among the worst we've seen" on child safety.
  • OpenAI. After promising adult content for verified adults in October 2025, OpenAI delayed it twice and in March 2026 shelved the plan indefinitely.
  • Character.AI and Meta. Character.AI ended open-ended chat for under-18s, and Meta added parental controls for teens' chats with AI characters.

The result: big platforms are cautious about romance, which leaves the category to specialist apps. Our page on the Grok AI girlfriend covers Ani.

5. Security and trust under the spotlight

2026 brought more scrutiny of how these apps protect data. In March a security audit of 17 companion apps found 14 critical and 311 high-severity issues, and in April My Lovely AI reported a breach affecting about 106,000 accounts. In January 2026, Character.AI and Google agreed to settle five lawsuits over harm to teens, including Megan Garcia's. Our timeline of AI girlfriend data breaches lists the leaks.

6. Bigger memory, and 7. more ways to pay

Memory. Apps now sell memory as a tier. TryNectar AI lists context windows from 8K to 64K by plan, LusyChat advertises up to 1M, and Kupid AI goes from the last 30 messages on Free to unlimited memory on its top plan. Editable memory, like Secrets AI's Lorebook, is becoming a selling point.

Pricing. Subscriptions still anchor the market, with a median cheapest plan of $7.75 a month across the apps we track, but in-app currencies do more of the work: 21 of the 31 apps sell one. Kupid AI even sells a one-time lifetime plan. Yearly billing is still the default push: month to month costs a median of 2.2 times the cheapest yearly rate.
