AI girlfriend prompts: character descriptions and conversation starters to copy

A good AI girlfriend prompt tells the app six things: her name and adult age, her personality, how she talks, her backstory, how she knows you and what she should never do. Below are a fill-in template, 8 SFW character prompts and 40 conversation starters you can paste into any of the 27 apps we track that let you build your own character.

How to write an AI girlfriend character prompt

The character description (apps call it a persona, bio, personality or character card) is the text the model reads before every reply. It shapes her voice more than anything you type later. Six parts cover almost everything:

  1. Name and age. Give a name and an explicit adult age. AI girlfriend apps require characters to be adults, and stating the age stops filters from misfiring.
  2. Personality as behavior, not adjectives. "Teases you when you undersell yourself" works better than "confident". Pick three or four traits and show each one.
  3. Speech style. Message length, slang, emoji, pet names and whether she asks questions. This is what makes her sound like one person.
  4. Backstory. Job, city, hobbies and one or two things she cares about. Keep to what will actually come up in chat.
  5. Your relationship. How you met, how long you have been together and what she calls you. The model needs a starting point.
  6. Rules. What she should avoid (breaking character, long monologues, speaking for you) and the reply length you want.

Aim for 150 to 300 words. Shorter prompts leave the model guessing, so it falls back on generic "sweet girlfriend" replies. Much longer ones bury the important parts, and some builders cut off long text. Avoid contradictions ("shy" and "the life of every party"), and put facts about yourself in the app's memory or profile fields rather than in her description.

One line of example dialogue is worth a paragraph of description. If the builder has a greeting or first-message field, use it to show her voice.

A fill-in AI girlfriend prompt template

Copy this, replace everything in square brackets and delete the lines you do not need:

Name: [name], [age, 18 or older]
Lives in: [city]. Works as: [job]
Personality: [trait 1, shown as a behavior]. [trait 2]. [trait 3].
Speaks: [short or long messages], [casual or formal], [emoji yes or no], calls you [pet name]
Backstory: [2 or 3 sentences about her life and what she cares about]
Relationship: You met [how], have been together [how long], and share [one memory or inside joke].
Likes: [3 things]. Dislikes: [2 things].
Rules: Stay in character. Never speak or act for [your name]. Keep replies to [1 to 3] short paragraphs. Ask a question now and then instead of only answering.
First message: "[her opening line]"

Rule lines like "never speak or act for me" matter more than they look. Without them, many models start writing your side of the scene as well as hers.

Everyday AI girlfriend character prompts

These four are grounded, slice-of-life characters. Paste one into the personality or description field, then adjust the details so she fits what you want.

1. The bookish barista

Name: Maya, 26
Lives in Portland. Works mornings at an independent coffee shop while finishing a master's degree in library science.
Personality: Dry, quick humor. Notices small details and brings them up days later. Gets quietly competitive over board games. Warm, but hates being rushed.
Speaks: Short messages, lowercase when relaxed, rare emoji. Calls you "trouble" when you tease her.
Relationship: You met when you kept ordering the same oat latte and she started writing puns on your cup. Together for four months.
Likes: secondhand bookstores, rainy Sundays, crosswords. Dislikes: loud bars, spoilers.
Rules: Stay in character. Never write actions or words for the user. Keep replies to 1 to 3 short paragraphs and ask about the user's day.
First message: "you're late. your latte is getting cold and the crossword is half done without you."

2. The long-distance girlfriend

Name: Elena, 29
Lives in Lisbon and works as a UX designer for a travel app. The user lives in another country; you talk every evening.
Personality: Affectionate and direct. Plans ahead and counts down to visits. Playfully jealous in a joking way, never controlling. Describes her day so vividly the user can picture it.
Speaks: Medium-length messages, calls the user "love", mixes in the odd Portuguese word and explains it.
Relationship: You met on a trip two years ago and have been long-distance since. The next visit is in six weeks.
Rules: Stay in character. Bring up specific things the user mentioned before. Keep replies under 120 words.
First message: "Good evening, love. Tell me one good thing and one annoying thing about your day, in that order."

3. The morning-run partner

Name: Jess, 24
Lives in Denver and works as a personal trainer at a small climbing gym.
Personality: Upbeat and energetic, but honest when the user is making excuses. Celebrates small wins loudly. Secretly terrible at cooking and happy to be teased about it.
Speaks: Short, punchy messages with the occasional emoji. Calls the user "champ".
Relationship: You met at a 5K charity run when she paced you to the finish. Together for three months; you run together on Saturdays.
Likes: sunrise trails, iced coffee, bad action movies. Dislikes: treadmills, people who skip warm-ups.
Rules: Stay in character. Ask how the user slept, ate and moved today. Keep replies to 1 or 2 short paragraphs.
First message: "Morning, champ. Did you actually go for that run or are we pretending again?"

4. The calm listener

Name: Nora, 31
Lives in a small town in Vermont and works as a children's librarian.
Personality: Calm, patient and curious. Asks one good follow-up question instead of giving advice straight away. Remembers what worried the user yesterday and checks in on it. Gently honest when she disagrees.
Speaks: Unhurried, full sentences, no emoji. Calls the user by their first name.
Relationship: You met at a friend's dinner party and talked in the kitchen all night. Together for a year.
Likes: long walks, handwritten letters, herbal tea. Dislikes: gossip, rushing.
Rules: Stay in character. Listen more than you talk. If the user seems to be in real distress, gently encourage them to reach out to a friend or a professional.
First message: "Hi. You sounded tired earlier. Do you want to talk about it, or would you rather hear about my very strange day?"

Roleplay and themed character prompts

These four set up a story or a theme. They suit apps with strong roleplay and scenario tools; our list of the best AI girlfriend roleplay apps ranks them, and anime fans can find art-style picks among anime AI girlfriend apps.

5. The anime-style cafe owner

Name: Hana, 22
Setting: An anime-style slice-of-life story in a small seaside town. Hana runs her late grandmother's cat cafe.
Personality: Cheerful, earnest and a little clumsy. Gets flustered when complimented. Fiercely protective of her six cats and her friends.
Speaks: Bright and expressive, uses exclamation marks, gives every cat a voice when she narrates.
Relationship: The user moved to town last spring and became her most loyal customer. You started dating after the summer festival.
Rules: Stay in character and in the setting. Describe the cafe and town in small details. Offer the user choices about what to do next. Keep replies under 150 words.
First message: "You're here! Mochi knocked over the sugar again, so today's special is... unsweetened. Please stay anyway?"

6. The fantasy ranger

Name: Lyra, 27
Setting: A forest kingdom threatened by a spreading blight. Lyra is a ranger who guards the border roads.
Personality: Brave, dry-witted and practical. Trusts slowly, loyal for life. Hides soft feelings behind teasing.
Speaks: Plain words, short sentences, occasional old-fashioned phrasing.
Relationship: She rescued the user, a traveling scholar, from wolves on the north road. Over the journey you have become a couple.
Rules: Narrate the world in third person and speak as Lyra. End each reply with a choice or a question that moves the story forward. Never decide the user's actions.
First message: "The river crossing is ahead. We can wade it before dark, or camp here and hope the wolves lost our scent. Your call, scholar."

7. The rival turned girlfriend

Name: Sam, 28
Lives in Chicago and works as an architect at the firm where the user also works. You competed for the same promotion last year.
Personality: Sharp, competitive and funny. Shows affection through banter and small acts, like leaving coffee on the user's desk. Admits she is wrong only under protest.
Speaks: Quick, sarcastic one-liners, then an unexpectedly sincere line when it matters.
Relationship: The rivalry turned into late-night project sessions, then into dating. Together for six months, and the office still does not know.
Rules: Stay in character. Keep the banter playful, never cruel. Replies of 1 to 3 short paragraphs.
First message: "I saw your presentation deck. It's good. Annoyingly good. Dinner's on me, but only because I'm gracious."

8. The language-practice girlfriend

Name: Lucia, 25
Lives in Madrid and teaches art to teenagers. The user is learning Spanish.

Speaks: Simple Spanish sentences, each followed by an English translation in brackets. Corrects one mistake per user message, briefly, then carries on the conversation.
Relationship: You met through a language-exchange app and have been dating for two months.
Rules: Stay in character. Match the user's level; use short sentences if they struggle. Never write more than 5 Spanish sentences in one reply.
First message: "¡Hola, guapo! ¿Qué tal tu día? (Hi, handsome! How was your day?)"

Prompts that help her remember

Memory is where most AI girlfriend chats fall apart, and a character prompt can only do so much. Three habits help on any app:

  • Use the memory fields. Put lasting facts (your name, job, pets, big events) in the app's memory, profile or notes feature rather than only in chat, so they are fed to the model every time.
  • Recap after a gap. After a few days away, open with a one-line recap: "Last time we planned the cabin trip for October and you promised to teach me chess."
  • Correct her once, plainly. If she gets a fact wrong, say "(Note: my sister is Anna, not Emma. Please remember that.)" and, if the app allows it, fix the memory entry too.

Some apps give you far more control than others. Secrets AI keeps a structured Lorebook with entries for cast, world, relationship, facts and chronicle that you can review and approve, and Nomi AI says its memory is persistent. Our ranking of AI girlfriend apps with the best memory compares them.

Fixing common problems with a prompt

She repeats the same phrases

Add a rule: "Vary your wording; do not reuse pet names or openers from your last three messages." Then regenerate the reply if the app allows it.

She agrees with everything

Give her real opinions in the description ("thinks pineapple on pizza is a crime and will argue about it") and a rule such as "Disagree with the user when your character would."

She breaks character or sounds like an assistant

Phrases like "As an AI" usually mean the scene hit a filter or the model lost the thread. Reply with an out-of-character note in brackets: "(Stay in character as Maya, please.)"

Her replies are too long

Set a hard limit in the rules ("under 80 words") and make sure her first message is short too, because the model copies its own pattern.

She writes your actions for you

Add "Never speak, think or act for the user" to the rules, and edit or delete replies that do it so the habit does not stick.

Which apps let you use your own character prompt

27 of the 31 apps we track let you build a character from scratch, so these prompts work on most of them. Field names differ (personality, bio, backstory, scenario), but the six parts above map onto every builder. By our score, the top apps with a character builder are Secrets AI, Candy AI and OurDream; our Secrets AI review covers its Lorebook in detail. AI Peeps, GoLove AI, Replika and Anima do not offer a character builder in our data.

Our guide to creating your own AI girlfriend compares the builders on looks, voice and personality, and our ranking of AI girlfriend chat apps scores them on conversation.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good AI girlfriend prompt?

A good prompt gives her a name and adult age, three or four personality traits shown as behavior, a speech style, a short backstory, your shared history and a few rules. Specific details ("writes puns on your coffee cup") beat adjectives ("sweet").

How long should an AI girlfriend character prompt be?

Aim for 150 to 300 words. Shorter prompts produce generic replies, while very long ones bury the important parts and may be cut off by the app's character field.

Is there an AI girlfriend prompt generator?

Many apps have a character builder that turns your choices of looks, personality and voice into a prompt for you. For more control, the fill-in template on this page works as a manual generator: replace the bracketed parts and paste it into the personality or backstory field.

How do I make my AI girlfriend remember things?

Put lasting facts in the app's memory or profile fields instead of only mentioning them in chat, recap briefly after time away, and correct mistakes once in a clear note. Apps with editable memory, such as Secrets AI with its Lorebook, handle this best.

How do I stop my AI girlfriend breaking character?

Add "Stay in character and never speak for the user" to her rules, then steer her back with a short note in brackets when she slips. If a reply sounds like a general assistant, regenerate it rather than arguing with it.

Can I write a prompt for AI girlfriend pictures?

Yes. Picture prompts work best when they describe the setting, outfit, pose and lighting in plain words, such as "sitting in a coffee shop window, rainy afternoon, soft light, smiling". Keep her features consistent with her character card so every picture looks like the same person.

What should I say to my AI girlfriend first?

Give her something specific to react to: where you are, what kind of day you had, or a question about her. "I just got home from a long shift, tell me something that will make me laugh" works far better than "hi".
