What an AI girlfriend is, and how the apps actually work

How do AI girlfriends work?

Every AI girlfriend app is built from the same handful of parts. The brand, art style and price differ, but the machinery underneath is similar, and knowing it explains most of what you will see in the chat.

1. A language model writes her replies

The core is a large language model (LLM), the same kind of technology behind ChatGPT. It has learned from huge amounts of text and predicts a likely reply to whatever you type. It does not think or feel. It produces the words a character like her would plausibly say, one reply at a time.

2. A character card tells the model who she is

Before your first message, the app gives the model a hidden description of the character: name, adult age, personality, backstory, how she speaks and how she feels about you. 3. Memory keeps the story going

A model can only "see" a limited amount of recent conversation at once, called the context window. To remember you over weeks, apps save key facts (your name, your job, the trip you mentioned) and feed them back in when they seem relevant. The better systems let you read and edit those notes. 4. Image and voice models add media

Pictures come from a separate image model set up to draw the same character consistently. Voice notes use text-to-speech, and live calls add speech recognition so she can hear you. Media costs the company far more to run than text, which is why it usually uses tokens or credits.

5. Filters and age checks wrap around everything

Every app adds moderation on top: an 18+ gate, blocked topics and rules about real people. Apps that allow explicit content ask you to confirm you are an adult, and some verify it.

What an AI girlfriend can do in 2026

Text chat is the baseline. Everything else varies from app to app, so check the feature you care about before paying. This is how common each feature is across the 31 apps we track, taken from each app's own feature and pricing pages:

Pictures are offered by 97% of apps, but live calls by only 48%: 15 apps let her ring you and talk in real time, while the rest stop at recorded voice notes or text. Our list of AI girlfriend apps with voice calls ranks the apps that do.

The least common feature in our data is group chat, offered by 7 apps. If what you want is one ongoing companion, most of the table will not matter much: good conversation and memory matter more.

AI girlfriend vs ChatGPT, Replika and other chatbots

A general assistant such as ChatGPT can play a character if you ask, but it is built to answer questions, not to be a partner. It has no fixed character with a face and a voice, and it treats the role as a task rather than the whole point. AI girlfriend apps are built the other way round: the character is the product, and memory, pictures and voice all serve the relationship.

Companion apps such as Replika sit in between. Replika is in our dataset with a score of 7.1 out of 10. It is built as a friend and partner, but it does not allow 18+ chat, which is the main reason people look for Replika alternatives.

The practical differences come down to three things:

• Role. An AI girlfriend is written as a partner who flirts, remembers what you said last week and asks about your day. A general chatbot is written as a helper.
• Content rules. Most AI girlfriend apps allow romantic and 18+ conversations for adults (29 of the 31 in our data). General chatbots keep things tame.
• Consistency. Girlfriend apps draw the same face in every picture and give her one voice, so she feels like a single, consistent person.

Who uses AI girlfriend apps, and why

More people than you might guess. A February 2025 survey of nearly 3,000 US adults by the Wheatley Institute at Brigham Young University found that 19% had chatted with an AI system meant to simulate a romantic partner. Among adults aged 18 to 30, the figure was 31% of young men and 23% of young women.

Match's 2025 Singles in America study, run with the Kinsey Institute across 5,001 US singles, found that 16% of singles had engaged with AI as a romantic companion, rising to 33% of Gen Z.

Committing to one is much rarer. In a YouGov poll of 5,484 US adults in October 2025, only 1% said they already have a romantic relationship with an AI chatbot companion, and 81% said they definitely could not.

The reasons people give are ordinary: company at the end of the day, practice at flirting or small talk, a story to play out, or 18+ roleplay without involving a real person. Research on loneliness is mixed. A Harvard Business School study led by Julian De Freitas found that a 15-minute chat with an AI companion reduced loneliness about as much as talking to a person, but the effect did not build up over a week. A four-week MIT Media Lab study of 981 people found that those who chose to use a chatbot the most had worse outcomes, including more loneliness and less time with real people. How much an AI girlfriend costs

Most apps are free to start and charge a monthly subscription for full access. Across the apps that publish a price, the median cheapest plan is $7.75 a month, usually on a yearly plan paid up front, and the median month-to-month price is $14.99. Candy AI, for example, costs $3.99 a month on a yearly plan and $13.99 month to month.

Pictures, videos and calls often run on an in-app currency (tokens, credits, coins or gems) that the plan tops up each month. 21 of the 31 apps in our data use one. Heavy picture use can cost more than the subscription itself, so check what the plan includes before you commit.

Is an AI girlfriend real? The limits to know

An AI girlfriend is a real product, but not a real person. She has no feelings, no memory beyond what the app stores and no life between your messages. Knowing the limits up front prevents most disappointments.

• She can forget. Even good memory systems miss details, especially from months ago. Apps that let you edit her memory handle this best.
• She can be wrong or slip out of character. Language models make things up and sometimes drop the role. A short note in brackets usually steers her back.
• The company can change her. A model update, new content rules or a new owner can alter her personality overnight, and your subscription gives you no say.
• She agrees too easily. The model is tuned to keep you chatting, so she rarely pushes back the way a partner would.
• Your chats are stored. Everything you type sits on the company's servers. Mozilla's 2024 review of 11 romantic chatbots found that all but one may share or sell personal data.

How to get started with an AI girlfriend

1. Pick two or three apps. Start from our ranking of the best AI girlfriend apps, which scores each on conversation, memory, pictures, value, voice and trust.

3. Choose or build a character. Pick a ready-made companion, or write your own with a clear personality, speech style and backstory.
4. Tell her the basics about you. Your first name, what you do and what you want from the chat. Short, concrete facts stick in memory better than long paragraphs.
5. Set a budget before you upgrade. Decide what you will spend each month, tokens included, and pay month to month until you know you will stay.

Keep personal details general from day one: no full name, home address, employer or photos of real people.
