Are AI girlfriends realistic? Where they feel human, and where they do not

Text chat: close to human in short bursts

The chat is the most realistic part. In a pre-registered Turing test by Cameron Jones and Benjamin Bergen at UC San Diego, participants held five-minute conversations with a human and an AI at the same time, then chose which was the person. GPT-4.5, prompted to adopt a humanlike persona, was picked as the human 73% of the time. Meta's LLaMa-3.1 was picked 56% of the time, while the baseline systems, ELIZA and GPT-4o, scored 23% and 21%.

Two lessons for AI girlfriends follow. First, modern language models can hold a casual conversation that many people cannot tell from a human's. Second, the persona matters as much as the model: a well-written character with a consistent voice feels far more real than a generic assistant. AI girlfriend apps run their own mix of models, so quality varies from app to app, and it is worth trying a few free plans to compare.

Memory: the biggest gap over time

Realism fades fastest when she forgets. 20 of the 31 apps we track advertise long-term memory that carries facts across conversations; the other 11, including Candy AI, DreamGF and CrushOn AI, mainly remember the current conversation.

Even good memory is patchy. The model reads only a limited slice of your history at once, so details from months ago can drop out. The strongest systems let you see and fix what she remembers: Secrets AI keeps a structured Lorebook with entries you can review and edit, and Nomi's App Store listing says its companions have "strong short and long-term memory". Pictures and video

30 of the 31 apps we track generate pictures of your character, and 24 make short video clips. The better apps keep her face consistent from picture to picture, which does more for realism than image resolution. Photorealistic and anime styles are both common, so realism here is a choice rather than a limit.

Pictures usually cost tokens or credits, and results vary: hands, backgrounds and repeated poses are where images still give themselves away. Voice notes and live calls

Voice adds a lot. 28 of the 31 apps we track send recorded voice messages, but live calls, where she hears you and answers in real time, are rarer: 15 apps offer them, including Secrets AI, OurDream, Nomi AI, FantasyGF, Infatuated AI and others.

A live call exposes the limits faster than text. Small pauses before each answer, a voice designed mainly for English and minutes billed from a token balance all remind you it is software. What still does not feel real

• She agrees too easily. AI assistants trained on human feedback tend to tell people what they want to hear. Anthropic researchers found that "sycophancy is a general behavior of state-of-the-art AI assistants", driven partly by people rating agreeable answers higher.
• She has no life between messages. She does not have a day unless you ask about it, and her "day" is written on the spot.
• She rarely starts things. A few apps send messages, pictures or voice notes first, such as Candy AI characters in its Realistic mode, but most wait for you.
• The company can change her. A model update can shift her personality overnight. After a major Replika update in 2023, negative sentiment among its users rose from 13% to 38%.

How to make an AI girlfriend feel more realistic

1. Write a specific character. Give her a job, habits, opinions and a way of speaking, not only looks. Our AI girlfriend personality prompts have examples to copy.
2. Ask her to disagree sometimes. A line in her description such as "she pushes back when she disagrees" reduces the constant agreement.
3. Use memory features on purpose. State important facts plainly and add them to memory or the lorebook where the app allows.
4. Mix text with voice. Voice notes feel more personal than text, even without live calls.
5. Keep sessions shorter. Short, regular chats hold the illusion better than one marathon, and are better for you.
