The two kinds of AI girlfriend memory

AI girlfriend memory works in two layers, and most confusion comes from mixing them up.

Short-term memory: the context window

Each time you send a message, the app passes the model a bundle of text: her character description, any saved memories and as much recent chat as fits. That limit is the context window. Anything that falls outside it, such as a joke from 200 messages ago, is simply not there when she writes her reply.

Long-term memory: saved facts

To remember you over weeks, the app pulls out key facts (your name, your job, your dog, the trip you mentioned) and stores them separately. When a new message seems related, the app feeds the matching facts back in. This is why she can remember your sister's name from last month but not what you said an hour ago in a long session.

Good apps let you see and edit the second layer. That is the single most useful memory feature to look for.

What free plans remember

Memory is often one of the things a free plan limits:

Secrets AI: the free plan includes 20 messages a day with basic memory.
Kupid AI: the free plan remembers the last 30 messages.
Selira AI: free chat is unlimited, but free chat history is deleted after 3 days.
Lovescape: says chat and memory stay free.
CrushOn AI: once free messages run out, chat drops to a free model with limited memory.

How to help her remember

State key facts plainly and early. "My name is Sam, I'm a nurse, I work nights" sticks better than hints spread over an evening.
Put permanent facts in her character description or the app's memory panel, not only in chat.
Correct mistakes straight away, in one clear sentence.
Recap after a break. A short "last time we..." brings the important thread back into view.
Keep one long-running chat for the relationship rather than starting fresh ones.

What her memory means for your privacy

Everything she remembers is stored on the company's servers, and memory makes those records more detailed. What happens when you delete your account varies a lot, according to each app's own policy:

Secrets AI: chat history deleted immediately on account deletion.
Nomi AI: all data, including every message, permanently deleted after a short delay.
Replika: messages and content processed for up to 60 days after the contract ends.
Candy AI: account data kept up to three years after your last activity unless you ask for deletion.
