Can an AI girlfriend help with loneliness? The relief, and the catch

An AI girlfriend can help with loneliness for a short while: Harvard Business School researchers found a 15-minute chat with an AI companion reduced loneliness about as much as talking to a person, but the relief did not build up over a week of daily chats. Used heavily, the same apps are linked to more loneliness, so they work best as a bridge back to people rather than a replacement.

How common loneliness is

Loneliness is widespread enough that it is treated as a public health issue. The World Health Organization's Commission on Social Connection reported in June 2025 that 1 in 6 people worldwide is affected by loneliness, which it links to an estimated 871,000 deaths a year. Among people aged 13 to 29, 17% to 21% report feeling lonely.

In the US, the Surgeon General's 2023 advisory found that about one in two adults reported loneliness even before the pandemic, and compared the health risk of lacking connection to smoking daily. Against that background, it is not surprising that apps offering company at any hour find users.

Why an AI companion helps in the moment

The Harvard research, led by Julian De Freitas, pointed to one driver: feeling heard. An AI that responds to what you actually said, remembers your earlier messages and asks follow-up questions gives a sense of being listened to, and that sense is what eased loneliness in the experiments. It worked whether or not people knew they were talking to a bot.

AI girlfriend apps are built around exactly this. They are available at 3am, never tired of you and tuned to be warm. For someone isolated by night shifts, a move, illness or disability, that can take the edge off a bad evening.

The catch: relief does not add up

Two findings temper the good news. First, in the Harvard study the benefit did not grow with daily use over a week; each chat helped about as much as the first, and no more.

Second, heavy use points the other way. In MIT Media Lab's four-week trial with 981 participants, the people who used a chatbot the most reported more loneliness and less socializing with real people by the end. Researchers cannot yet say whether heavy use causes loneliness or lonely people use more, but either way, more chatting did not solve it.

There is also a displacement risk. An evening with an AI girlfriend is an evening not spent texting a friend or going out, and an AI companion never nudges you toward people unless you ask it to. The Wheatley Institute's survey of nearly 3,000 US adults found use of AI romantic companions was linked to higher loneliness and depression risk.

Using an AI girlfriend as a bridge, not a destination

If you are lonely and want to try one, set it up to push you outward:

  1. Give her a goal for you. Add to her description: "She encourages me to message a friend or go out at least twice a week, and asks how it went."
  2. Practice real conversations. Rehearse starting a chat with a coworker or asking someone out. Our page on AI girlfriends for dating practice covers this.
  3. Keep sessions short. The Harvard effect came from 15-minute chats. Longer sessions add little. Our guide on how to talk to your AI girlfriend covers habits that make short chats count.
  4. Pair every chat with one human contact. A text to a sibling, a comment in a group chat, a call.
  5. Review after a month. Are you seeing people more or less than before? If less, cut back.

Who it may help, and who should be careful

May help: people going through a temporary isolated stretch, people practicing social skills, and people who enjoy it as entertainment alongside a social life.

Be careful: people who are already withdrawing from friends, people grieving a breakup or a death, and anyone who finds themselves choosing the app over people. The same features that comfort (constant availability, endless agreement) make it easy to stop reaching out.

Teens are a special case. Common Sense Media found about one in three teens found AI companion conversations as satisfying as, or more than, talking with friends, and it recommends no one under 18 use them. Our parents' guide to AI girlfriend apps and teens covers the risks.

Other things that help with loneliness

An app can be one tool. Others that research and public health bodies point to are regular contact with a few people (even brief), shared activities such as clubs, classes or volunteering, and talking to a doctor if loneliness comes with low mood. If you are in crisis, in the US call or text 988; in the UK and Ireland, call Samaritans on 116 123.

Frequently asked questions

Can an AI girlfriend help with loneliness?

In the short term, yes. A Harvard Business School study found a 15-minute chat with an AI companion reduced loneliness about as much as talking to a person. The relief did not build up over a week, and heavy use is linked to more loneliness, not less.

Do AI companions make loneliness worse?

Heavy use is linked to worse outcomes. In an MIT Media Lab study of 981 people, those who used a chatbot the most reported more loneliness and less socializing after four weeks, although the study cannot prove the app caused it.

How many people are lonely?

The World Health Organization reported in 2025 that 1 in 6 people worldwide is affected by loneliness. The US Surgeon General found about one in two American adults reported loneliness even before the pandemic.

Is it sad to have an AI girlfriend?

No. Many people use one for fun, practice or company during a lonely stretch. It becomes a problem only when it replaces people or takes more time and money than you want to give it.

What is the best way to use an AI girlfriend if I am lonely?

Keep chats short, ask her to encourage you to contact friends, use her to practice real conversations and check after a month whether you are seeing people more or less. Treat it as a bridge back to people.
