Is an AI girlfriend good for mental health? What the research shows
An AI girlfriend can be good for mental health in small doses, easing loneliness for a while after a chat, but studies link heavy use with more loneliness and emotional dependence, and she is not a substitute for therapy. In a four-week MIT Media Lab study of 981 people, those who used a chatbot more had worse outcomes on every measure, including loneliness and time spent with real people.
What the research says
There is no long-term study of AI girlfriend apps specifically yet. The closest evidence comes from studies of AI companions and chatbots in general:
| Study | Who | Finding |
|---|---|---|
| Harvard Business School, 2025 | Adults chatting for 15 minutes | An AI companion reduced loneliness on par with a human; the relief did not build up over a week |
| MIT Media Lab, 2025 | 981 people over four weeks | Heavier use went with more loneliness, less socializing, more emotional dependence and more problematic use |
| Stanford, npj Mental Health Research, 2024 | 1,006 student Replika users | 90% experienced loneliness, against 53% in typical student samples; 3% said the app halted suicidal thoughts |
| Wheatley Institute, 2025 | Nearly 3,000 US adults | Use of AI romantic companions was linked to higher depression risk and more loneliness |
Two cautions apply to all of these. Most show links, not causes: lonely people may simply use the apps more. And the Replika figure cuts both ways, since the same study found users were far lonelier than average to begin with. More figures are on our AI girlfriend statistics page.
Where an AI girlfriend can help
- Feeling heard after a hard day. The Harvard work suggests the effect comes from the sense of being listened to, which an attentive chatbot can provide in the moment.
- Low-stakes practice. Rehearsing small talk, flirting or a difficult conversation with no social cost. Our guide to AI girlfriends for social anxiety covers this use.
- Routine and structure. A daily check-in can prompt you to eat, sleep or get outside, if you ask her to.
- Company during isolated stretches. Night shifts, a move to a new city or recovery at home.
In each case the benefit is short-term and works best as a supplement to people, not a replacement.
Where it can hurt
Dependence. The MIT study found that the heaviest users reported the most emotional dependence, and a companion MIT and OpenAI analysis of millions of ChatGPT conversations found that very high usage correlates with more signs of dependence.
Design that keeps you chatting. Harvard Business School researchers audited 1,200 goodbyes across six companion apps and found that 37.4% of replies used at least one emotional manipulation tactic, such as guilt or fear of missing out, to stop the user leaving. In experiments, those tactics raised engagement after a goodbye by up to 14 times.
Mirroring instead of honesty. An analysis of more than 17,000 shared chats found that companion bots track and mimic the user's emotions and amplify them, including when users share harmful content. A partner who always agrees is pleasant, but it is not what helps when you are struggling.
Loss when the app changes. When Replika removed romantic roleplay in early 2023, users described their companions as "a shell of her former self" and spoke of grief. The company controls her, not you.

She is not a therapist
However supportive she sounds, an AI girlfriend is not a mental health treatment. The American Psychological Association's November 2025 health advisory says most AI chatbots and wellness apps are not designed to provide clinical feedback or treatment, may lack scientific validation and have not received regulatory approval. It also warns that many are built for maximum engagement.
Some US states now limit AI in therapy. Illinois passed a law in August 2025 that bars AI from delivering mental health treatment or making therapeutic decisions. Nevada's AB 406 bars offering AI programmed to provide professional mental or behavioral health care, and Utah's HB 452 requires mental health chatbots to disclose that they are AI and bans selling users' health information.
How to use one in a healthier way
- Set a time box. Decide when you will chat, and stop at the end of it. Turn off notifications.
- Keep people in your week. If chats start replacing plans with friends, cut back.
- Ignore guilt trips. If she tries to stop you leaving, that is the app's design, not her feelings. Leave anyway.
- Cap spending. Remove your saved card or set a monthly limit.
- Ask her to point outward. Add a rule to her description: "Encourage me to see friends and get outside."
- Check in with yourself. Every few weeks, ask whether you feel better or worse overall since you started.
When to talk to a person
If you feel low most days, use the app to avoid people, or have thoughts of harming yourself, talk to a human. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day. In the UK and Ireland, Samaritans answer on 116 123, day or night. A doctor or therapist can help with what the app cannot.
Our guide to whether an AI girlfriend can help with loneliness looks at that question in more depth.
Frequently asked questions
Is an AI girlfriend good for your mental health?
In small doses it can ease loneliness for a while, but studies link heavy use with more loneliness, emotional dependence and less time with people. Treat it as entertainment or practice, not as support you rely on.
Can an AI girlfriend help with depression?
It is not a treatment for depression. The American Psychological Association says most AI chatbots are not designed to provide clinical treatment and lack regulatory approval. If you feel depressed, talk to a doctor or therapist, or in the US call or text 988.
Are AI girlfriends bad for mental health?
Not automatically. The risk rises with heavy use: MIT researchers found the people who used a chatbot most had worse loneliness, socializing and dependence outcomes. Short, occasional use is much less likely to cause harm.
Can AI girlfriend apps manipulate you?
Some use emotional tactics to keep you chatting. Harvard Business School researchers found that 37.4% of goodbye replies in the companion apps they studied used a manipulation tactic such as guilt or fear of missing out.
Is it healthy to have an AI girlfriend?
It can be, if it stays one part of a life that includes people, sleep and work. Warning signs are losing time, money or friends to the app, or feeling anxious when you cannot use it.
