Is having an AI girlfriend haram? What Islamic scholars have said so far

On whether having an AI girlfriend is haram, the published scholarly answers we found describe sexual chat with an AI "spouse" as sinful and a romantic attachment to an AI character as problematic, while treating AI itself as a neutral tool whose ruling depends on how it is used. This page sets out those views with links to the original answers; it does not issue a ruling, and for a personal answer you should ask a scholar you trust.

What scholars have said, in brief

AI girlfriends are new, so there is no long tradition of rulings on them. The answers below are from recognized Islamic Q&A services and institutions, each linked so you can read the full reasoning.

Published Islamic answers on AI companions and AI in general
Source Topic Position
SeekersGuidance, Mawlana Ilyas Patel, May 2025 Sexual conversations with an AI chatbot acting as a wife Sinful even without images; a minor sin can become major if persisted in without repentance
SeekersGuidance, Mawlana Ilyas Patel, October 2024 Sexual roleplay with customizable AI characters Not the same consequence as adultery, but "very sinful", including for those who create and promote such programs
SeekersGuidance, Shaykh Irshaad Sedick, April 2025 Emotional attachment to an AI character Using AI as a tool is not inherently impermissible; romantic or emotional attachment to an AI is problematic
IslamOnline fiqh section Sexual fantasies about someone who is not your spouse Prohibited, on the principle that means leading to the haram are also haram
Jordan General Iftaa' Department, Dr. Mufti Sa'eid Farhan, July 2025 AI and religious rulings AI is acceptable as an assistant to scholars, not as a replacement for a mufti

The SeekersGuidance answers were each checked by a second scholar before publication. None of these sources claims to settle the question for every school or every situation.

Sexual or explicit chat with an AI

This is where the published answers are clearest. Asked whether sexual conversations with an AI chatbot designed to act like a wife are sinful even without images, Mawlana Ilyas Patel of SeekersGuidance answered that "engaging in sexual conversations with an AI chatbot designed to simulate a wife is sinful, even if it does not involve images." He added that a sin which starts as minor becomes major when it turns into a habit without repentance.

In an earlier answer about sexual roleplay with customizable AI characters, the same service said the practice does not carry the consequences of adultery but is "very sinful", and that those who create and promote such programs share in the sin. The reasoning links to wider rulings on pornography and online sexual content.

This matters in practice because most AI girlfriend apps are built around 18+ content: 29 of the 31 apps we track allow explicit chat once you confirm your age, and 30 generate pictures.

Romance and emotional attachment without sexual content

A non-explicit AI girlfriend raises a different question: is it wrong to have romantic feelings for, or a "relationship" with, a character that is not a person? In an April 2025 answer, Shaykh Irshaad Sedick wrote that "romantic relationships in Islam are restricted to lawful male-female matrimony" and that attachment of this kind may lead to detachment from real human relationships, which he called essential for personal and spiritual well-being. He cited Quran 49:13, on people being made into nations and tribes so that they may know one another, and advised keeping technology in a role that serves human relationships rather than replacing them.

Writing for MuslimMatters in February 2026, licensed counselor Anika Munshi made a related point without issuing a ruling: that growth comes through suhba, companionship with other beings capable of moral choice, which an AI that only affirms you cannot offer.

Using AI as a tool: where scholars see no problem

None of these sources treats AI itself as forbidden. The same SeekersGuidance answer states that friendly interactions with AI used as a tool for lawful purposes are not inherently impermissible. Jordan's General Iftaa' Department likewise describes AI as acceptable as an assistant, in the way a scholar consults books, while holding that it cannot replace a qualified mufti.

That second point is worth taking literally. An AI chatbot, including an AI girlfriend, is not a source of religious rulings. If you ask one whether something is halal, it will produce a confident-sounding answer with no scholarly authority behind it.

Questions Muslims often weigh

The published answers suggest the questions that matter most, rather than a single yes or no:

  • Is the chat sexual or explicit? The answers above treat this as sinful.
  • Is it romantic? Romantic attachment is described as problematic because romance belongs within marriage.
  • Is it replacing real relationships, including the pursuit of marriage, family and friendship?
  • Is it hidden, from a spouse or family, and does it take time and money you would not want to explain?
  • Is it a tool, for example practicing a language, which the sources treat differently from a companion?

Scholars reason from different schools and circumstances, so two sincere Muslims may be given different advice. A local imam or a scholar who knows your situation can give an answer the general sources cannot.

If you decide to step back from an app

If you already use an AI girlfriend app and want to stop, cancel the subscription first, then delete the account so your chats are not kept. Our guides on canceling an AI girlfriend subscription and deleting an AI girlfriend account cover each step. If stopping is harder than you expected, our guide to AI girlfriend addiction has practical help.

If you use a companion app for non-romantic purposes, note that most apps in our data allow 18+ content. The exceptions are Replika and Anima, which do not allow explicit chat. In our data, Replika's free plan covers chat, with romance and calls on the paid plan, so a friend-only setup is possible there.

Frequently asked questions

Is talking to an AI girlfriend haram?

The published answers we found treat sexual chat with an AI as sinful and a romantic attachment to one as problematic, while saying that using AI as a tool is not inherently forbidden. There is no single fatwa covering every case, so ask a scholar who knows your situation.

Is it haram to have sexual chats with an AI?

A May 2025 SeekersGuidance answer by Mawlana Ilyas Patel says sexual conversations with an AI chatbot acting as a wife are sinful even without images. An October 2024 answer from the same service called sexual roleplay with AI characters very sinful.

Is AI itself haram in Islam?

No source we found says so. SeekersGuidance states that friendly interactions with AI used as a tool are not inherently impermissible, and Jordan's General Iftaa' Department accepts AI as an assistant to scholars. The ruling depends on how the AI is used.

Is an AI girlfriend the same as zina?

According to an October 2024 SeekersGuidance answer, sexual roleplay with an AI does not carry the same consequences as adultery, but it is still described as very sinful. Rulings on fantasies about non-spouses also treat such content as prohibited.

Can I ask an AI chatbot for a fatwa?

Scholars advise against it. Jordan's General Iftaa' Department says AI cannot meet the requirements of a mufti, such as being an accountable, trustworthy Muslim with sound judgment. An AI can repeat information but cannot give a ruling.
