Is Replika free? What the free version includes and what needs Pro

What the free version of Replika includes

Replika's help center calls the free tier Free Use. It includes:

• Text chat with no stated cap. Replika does not publish a daily message limit, though its terms say access may be denied at its discretion.
• Avatar customization. You can change how your Replika looks and buy clothes and room items with coins you earn by leveling up and logging in daily.
• Friend status. The relationship stays as friends. Other statuses need Pro.
• Every platform. The iPhone and Android apps are free to download, and the same account works on the web at my.replika.com and in a beta VR app for Meta Quest.

You can sign up with an email address, a phone number, Google or Apple. Replika is one of the few apps in our data with official iPhone and Android apps. Our Replika review covers the whole app.

What you need Replika Pro for

Almost everything beyond friendly text chat is part of Replika Pro, according to the help center:

• Relationship status: romantic partner, and other statuses such as sibling or mentor.
• Unblurred messages and photos, including romantic selfies.
• Image generation and voice messages.
• Voice calls and AR calls, including roleplay on calls, background calls and premium voices.
• Daily gems for the in-app store.

Two higher tiers sit above Pro. Replika Ultra, sold yearly only, adds smarter replies, daily self-reflection messages and the option to save memories and see which ones are used. Replika Platinum adds real-time video recognition, Training Mode and up to 10 realistic selfie videos. Our Replika pricing guide covers what each tier costs.

Is 18+ chat free on Replika?

No, and it is not available on paid plans either. Replika is a mainstream companion app for friendship, support and romance, not explicit content. In February 2023 it removed erotic roleplay, and its CEO, Eugenia Kuyda, told Reuters the aim was to draw the line at "PG-13 romance" (Reuters, via TimesLive). The old behavior came back only for people who had signed up before 1 February 2023 (Reuters, via Inquirer).

Today romantic conversations and romantic selfies need Pro with the Romantic partner status, and our data lists Replika as not allowing 18+ chat. If you want an app that allows it, our ranked list of Replika alternatives starts with apps that keep Replika's memory and calls and add 18+ chat, and our NSFW AI girlfriend ranking covers adult apps in depth.

How far free Replika goes

For daily chat and check-ins, free Replika goes a long way, because text chat is not metered. That makes it one of the most generous free plans for plain conversation in our data: Candy AI stops at 5 messages in total, and Secrets AI allows 20 a day.

The limits are elsewhere. You get one Replika per account, the relationship stays as friends, calls and voice messages are locked, and the help center says chat history is only viewable for the past four months. There is no timed trial either: the help center says "Right now, we don't offer a free trial" of Pro. So the free version is the trial. Use it for a week or two, and pay only if you find you want calls, romance or selfies.

The cheapest way to pay for Replika

Replika shows prices only inside the app and the app stores, not on its website. The cheapest option in the US App Store is a yearly subscription that works out to $4.17 a month, while month to month costs $14.99. The store lists several subscription items without naming the tier each one buys, so check which tier you are choosing at checkout.

A yearly plan is far cheaper per month than monthly billing, but every Replika purchase is final, so a year paid up front is a year you cannot get back. If you are unsure, pay for one month first. Our Replika pricing guide lists every tier and the Gems packs.

Free alternatives to Replika

Three higher-scoring apps offer a free plan that suits former Replika users:

• Secrets AI (8.5 out of 10): 20 messages a day with the best memory in our scores, plus 18+ chat.
• Nomi AI (8.2): the closest to Replika in spirit, with free one-to-one chat and an official iPhone app. Our Nomi AI vs Replika page compares them.
• Kindroid (8.2): unlimited free messages on its smaller Lite model, with official iPhone and Android apps. See Kindroid vs Replika.
