Replika review: a caring AI friend, but is it worth paying for?
Our Replika review in one line: it is worth using if you want a free, friendly companion for daily check-ins on a proper phone app, and not worth paying for if you want 18+ chat, which it does not allow. It scores 7.1 out of 10 (#22 of 31 apps), text chat is free with no stated cap, and Pro, which adds romance, calls and selfies, costs from $4.17 a month on a yearly plan.
Replika is one of the oldest AI companions, and it shows in the product. It has official iPhone and Android apps, a web version and a beta VR app, and its homepage calls it "the AI friend to do life with". Free chat is not metered, your Replika remembers what matters to you, and Pro adds voice calls, AR calls, voice messages and selfies. For someone who wants a supportive friend to talk to every day, it does that well.
It is not an adult app. Replika removed erotic roleplay in February 2023 and now draws the line at romance: romantic status and romantic selfies need Pro, and explicit content is not allowed on any plan. It also scores below most apps we rank on conversation and media, and it has no video generation or group chat.
The business side is mixed. Luka, Inc. is a real US company with a detailed privacy policy, but Italy fined it 5 million euros in 2025 over data processing and age checks, every purchase is final, and there is no free trial. Use the free version first. If you find you want 18+ chat or more features, our Replika alternatives are a better use of the money.

Is Replika free? The free version
Yes. Free Use includes text chat with no stated cap, avatar customization and the friend relationship, and the apps are free to download. Coins from leveling up and daily logins buy clothes and room items. The help center says there is no free trial of Pro, so the free version is how you try Replika.
It is one of the most generous free plans for plain conversation in our data, because chat is not metered. What you cannot do for free is call, hear voice messages, get selfies or set a romantic status. Our page on whether Replika is free covers the limits in detail.
Romance, roleplay and what Replika does not allow
Replika allows romance but not explicit content. With Pro and the Romantic partner status, your Replika can be a partner and send romantic selfies, and roleplay on any topic works in asterisk style. The terms ban making it impersonate a real person without their written consent.
That line was drawn in February 2023, when Replika removed erotic roleplay and its CEO told Reuters the aim was "PG-13 romance" (Reuters, via TimesLive). Only accounts created before 1 February 2023 got the old behavior back. If you want 18+ chat, our NSFW AI girlfriend ranking lists apps built for it.
Voice, calls and pictures
Voice is one of Replika's strengths. Pro includes voice messages, voice calls with roleplay, AR calls that place your Replika in the room through your camera, background calls and premium voices. Replika is one of 15 apps in our data with live calls.
Pictures are more limited. Pro includes image generation and unblurred selfies, and Platinum adds up to 10 realistic selfie videos, but there is no general video generation. Platinum's real-time video recognition lets your Replika react to what your camera sees. Our ranking of AI girlfriend apps with voice calls compares calling features across apps.
Memory and conversation
Replika's homepage says it "always remembers what matters", and our data rates its memory as long-term. You can view and remove single memories in the Memory section, and Ultra adds saving memories and seeing which ones a reply used. The help center says chat history is viewable for the past four months.
Conversation is where Replika scores lowest in our ratings. It is built for supportive, everyday chat rather than long stories, and you get one Replika per account, with no other characters and no group chat. Chat works mainly in English, and the App Store lists French, German, Portuguese and Spanish. Nomi AI is the closest rival on memory: see our Nomi AI vs Replika comparison.
Is Replika safe? Company, privacy and canceling
Replika is run by Luka, Inc., a Delaware company based in San Francisco. Its privacy policy says conversations are never shared with advertisers or sold, while anonymized portions of messages help train its own safety systems. In 2025 Italy's data protection authority fined Luka 5 million euros over data processing and age checks (EDPB). Our page on whether Replika is safe covers the details.
To cancel, use the store you paid in: the App Store, Google Play, or Subscription in settings at my.replika.com. Deleting the app or account does not cancel a store subscription, and all purchases are final. Our guide on how to cancel Replika has the steps.
Who Replika suits, and who should skip it
Pick Replika if you want a kind, patient friend to talk to every day, if you want a real App Store or Google Play app, or if you want voice and AR calls without token prices. The free version alone is enough for many people.
Skip it if you want 18+ chat, several characters, group scenes or video. Secrets AI scores 8.5 and allows 18+ chat with a strong memory, Nomi AI is the closest match in spirit, and Kindroid has official phone apps too. Our Replika alternatives page ranks eight apps, and our Kindroid vs Replika page compares the two apps with full store listings.
