Character AI pricing: what c.ai lite and c.ai+ really cost

Every Character AI plan and price

Character.AI sells two paid tiers on top of its free plan. Prices below come from its subscribe page and help center, checked September 2026.

c.ai lite is priced by region, so the $4.99 figure is the US starting price, and the US App Store also lists a weekly Lite item. c.ai+ is the full plan. All three tiers share the same content rules, so paying changes quality and comfort, not what characters are allowed to write. Our Character AI review explains what each feature does in practice.

What Charms cost and what they buy

Charms are Character.AI's in-app currency. You earn them through quests, such as logging in each day, creating a persona or posting to the feed, and c.ai+ members get 20% bonus Charms. In the current beta they can buy extra chat images in Imagine, skip slow mode or bypass ads (Charms FAQ).

Character.AI does not publish a price per image or per skip, so you cannot work out a cost per action the way you can on token-based apps. The good news is that nothing essential needs Charms: chat, voice calls and characters work without them. Yearly vs monthly: how much you save

Only c.ai+ has a yearly option. It costs $94.99 a year against $9.99 a month, so a year works out to $7.92 a month, about 21% less. The subscribe page shows the yearly price against a struck-through $119.88, which is simply twelve monthly payments, and labels it "save 21%".

The saving is real, but the whole year is charged on day one, and Character.AI does not refund unused time. A sensible order is: try the free plan, pay monthly for one or two months, then switch to yearly if you are still chatting every week.

Renewal and refunds

Every paid plan renews automatically until you cancel. When you cancel, the plan stays active to the end of the period you paid for, then the account returns to the free tier.

Refunds are limited. Payments are non-refundable except where the law requires. For App Store and Google Play purchases you ask Apple or Google, under their own policies. For web purchases through Stripe, you open a support ticket under "Payments and purchases" (c.ai lite FAQ). There are no partial refunds for unused time in a billing period. Character AI discounts, promo codes and sales

We know of no working Character AI promo code or coupon, and its help center does not publish one. The discounts it does offer are these:

• Yearly c.ai+: $94.99 a year instead of twelve monthly payments, about 21% off.
• Sales: a Summer Flash Sale gave new and returning subscribers a lower price for their first 3 months or first year, applied automatically at checkout with no code (sale terms). Watch the subscribe page for the next one.
• Tests: the site has shown a lower monthly price to some visitors as an experiment, so the price you see can differ.

Sites that promise "Character AI promo codes" usually list expired sale links. If a checkout asks for a code, leave it blank; sale prices apply on their own.

The cheapest way to use Character AI, and how it compares

The cheapest way is the free plan, since messages are unlimited. If you want better replies, c.ai lite at $4.99 a month is the cheapest upgrade, and it is below the median cheapest plan of $7.75 across the 31 AI girlfriend apps we rank.

Against 18+ companion apps, Character.AI is cheap because it does not sell pictures or call minutes. Those apps charge more but allow adult chat:

• Candy AI: $3.99 a month on a yearly plan, $13.99 month to month, plus tokens for pictures.
• Nomi AI: $8.33 a month on a yearly plan, $15.99 month to month.
• Secrets AI: $9.17 a month on a yearly plan, $19.99 month to month, with Moments for pictures and calls.
