Character AI review: the biggest character chat app, with limits

Character AI pricing: free, c.ai lite and c.ai+

Character.AI has three tiers. The free plan costs nothing. c.ai lite starts at $4.99 a month and is priced by region, and the US App Store also sells a weekly Lite option. c.ai+ costs $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, which works out to $7.92 a month, a saving of about 21% on the yearly plan.

There is no per-message charge on any plan. The app also has a currency called Charms, which you mostly earn by doing quests such as logging in daily, creating a persona or posting to the feed. In the current beta, Charms can buy extra chat images, skip slow mode or bypass ads, and Charm packs are sold in the app stores. Is Character AI free? What the free plan includes

Yes. The free plan gives unlimited messaging on the basic chat style, basic memory, 15 memory pins and a daily taste of the premium chat styles. You pay for it with full ads, a slow mode and, at busy times, a waiting room that c.ai+ members skip.

That is far more than most apps in our database give away. Candy AI stops free users at 5 messages in total and Secrets AI at 20 a day, though both of those allow 18+ chat and Character.AI does not. The honest limit on the free plan is quality, not quantity: the basic chat style and basic memory are where paying makes the most difference. Voice calls, images and group scenes

Voice is Character.AI's standout feature. Character Calls lets you talk out loud with a character and hear it answer, and the company opened it to all users for free in June 2024 (Character.AI blog). You can also give characters their own voices. Among the apps we rank, live calls almost always cost extra: Secrets AI charges 50 Moments a minute, for example.

Images come through Imagine, which makes pictures inside chats and in a separate gallery. Charms can pay for extra chat images in the beta. Our data does not list video generation. Group chat lets several characters share one conversation, and Scenes gives you ready-made story setups to play through.

Memory and chat quality

Memory has improved a lot in 2026. Story Memory, automatically captured Facts and Pin to Memory began rolling out to all users in May 2026, and a Lorebook for tracking characters, places and plot entered beta in July 2026 with early access for c.ai+ members (memory update, Lorebook announcement). Free users get 15 pins, c.ai lite 30, and c.ai+ what the company calls its best memory.

Chat quality depends on the chat style. Free users get the basic style plus a daily taste of the premium ones; c.ai lite adds a daily allowance of the premium styles, and c.ai+ makes them unlimited. The app supports 27 languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Japanese and Korean.

Is Character AI safe? Rules, privacy and age checks

Character.AI is a legitimate company with a real address, app store listings and a public help center, but read three things before you use it.

• The filter is firm. Its help center says pornographic, vulgar or obscene content is against the terms and filtered (NSFW policy).
• Your chats can train its models. The help center says it keeps some data you share to train and improve its AI. EEA and UK users can switch off "Improve the Model for Everyone", and a July 2026 policy update says users can opt out (training settings).
• Age checks are real. An in-house age model runs on all accounts, and anyone flagged as under 18 gets the teen experience or can verify with a Persona selfie, which Character.AI says Persona deletes within 7 days.

How to cancel Character AI

Where you cancel depends on where you paid. On the web, go to Settings, then Account, then Manage; Character.AI emails you a secure link to the Stripe customer portal, where you cancel c.ai+. If you subscribed in the iPhone or Android app, cancel in your Apple ID or Google Play subscriptions instead.

Your plan stays active until the end of the billing period, then the account drops to the free tier, which still has unlimited messages. Payments are non-refundable except where the law requires, and app store purchases are refunded, if at all, by Apple or Google. Who Character AI suits, and who should skip it

Pick Character.AI if you want clean fandom roleplay, story games or practice conversations, if you like talking out loud, or if you want unlimited chat without paying. The free plan is enough to find out whether you like it, and c.ai lite at $4.99 a month is one of the cheapest paid plans we track.

Skip it if you want 18+ chat or explicit pictures, because the filter will stop you, or if you want your chats kept out of model training and you are not in a region with the opt-out.
