What the Character AI free plan includes

Character.AI does not cap free messages. You can chat with any public character, create your own, set up personas, use group chats and scenes, and make two-way voice calls without paying. According to its subscribe page, the free tier includes:

• Unlimited messaging on the basic chat style
• Basic memory and 15 memory pins
• A daily taste of the premium chat styles
• Full ads, a slow mode and limited features

Sign-up needs a Google account, an Apple ID or an email link; passwords were retired in 2024. No card is needed. Our Character AI review covers what the app does beyond the free plan.

What you have to pay for

The paid tiers do not unlock messages, since those are already unlimited. They unlock quality and comfort:

• c.ai lite ($4.99 a month, priced by region): a daily allowance of the premium chat styles, fewer ads with no banners, better memory, 30 pins and chat customization.
• c.ai+ ($9.99 a month): no ads, unlimited premium chat styles, the best memory, the advanced Lorebook, priority access to new features, 20% bonus Charms and premium support. Members also skip the waiting room.

Nothing on the paid tiers unlocks adult content. The filter is the same for every account, so paying will not change what characters are allowed to say.

How far the free plan really goes

For most people, a long way. Free users can chat every day without a counter running out, which is not true of any 18+ app we rank. The limits you will notice are softer:

• Ads. The free tier shows full ads between chats.
• Waiting rooms. At peak load the app can queue free users before a chat starts.
• Memory. Basic memory and 15 pins mean long stories lose detail sooner than on c.ai+.
• Chat style. The premium styles write longer, richer replies, and free users only get a daily taste.

Charms, the in-app currency, can also be earned for free through quests such as daily logins, and in the current beta they can skip slow mode or bypass ads. If you mostly chat in short sessions, the free plan may be all you need.

The cheapest paid option

c.ai lite is the cheapest way to pay, starting at $4.99 a month. c.ai+ costs $9.99 month to month, or $94.99 for a year, about $7.92 a month.
