Our verdict

Anima is built for friendly chat and social practice with a single avatar. Chat, avatar customization and texting games are free, and Pro unlocks all avatars and wider roleplay and removes ads. Pro is sold in the app, and its price is not listed on the website. Anima is run by Labane Corp. Ltd in Cyprus, its privacy policy says it uses chats to train its AI models, and web purchases can be refunded only if you ask within 24 hours of payment.

Talkie is a character community with many user-made characters. Text and real-time voice chat are free, limited by an energy meter you refill with ads or gems, and Talkie+ costs $9.99 a month. It generates images and turns a recent chat into a short video. Its terms ban pornographic content and it accepts users from age 14. Both apps are on Google Play, and neither main app is listed on the US App Store. See our Anima review for its plans.
