The pattern mostly holds across the apps we rank. Apps built around 18+ content are usually web apps, because Google Play bans sexual content, while Replika, Anima, Nomi AI and Kindroid are on Google Play. LusyChat, Muah AI and GirlfriendGPT are the exceptions, with APKs from their own sites. That leaves almost no legitimate reason for an AI girlfriend APK, which is exactly the gap APK and "mod" sites fill.
What mod APKs promise, and what they deliver
Mod APKs usually promise unlimited tokens, free premium or no message limits. They cannot deliver that, because your plan, your token balance and the AI itself all live on the company's servers. A modified app on your phone can change what the screen shows, not what the server allows.
What they can deliver is harm. Cyble found more than 50 fake and malicious apps using the ChatGPT icon, some with "no AI functionality" at all (Cyble). Kaspersky's SparkCat research found data-stealing code in Google Play apps, including AI-featured "messaging apps," with infected apps downloaded more than 242,000 times (Kaspersky). Apps pulled from mirror sites get no such review.
A mod that asks you to sign in with your real account can also pass your login to whoever built it, and with it your chat history and saved card.
Your data is already sensitive with the real apps
AI girlfriend chats are some of the most personal data on a phone, and the category's record is not good. Mozilla's 2024 review of 11 romantic AI chatbots gave every one its privacy warning label, found that 90% may share or sell personal data and that about half would not let users delete it (Mozilla Foundation).
Breaches have happened too. Muah.ai's 2024 breach exposed 1.9 million email addresses alongside image prompts (Have I Been Pwned), and in 2025 two companion apps left 43 million messages from over 400,000 people exposed (Malwarebytes). Android's sideloading rules are tightening
Google's own analysis found "over 50 times more malware from internet-sideloaded sources than on apps available through Google Play" (Android Developers Blog). Its answer is developer verification, which ties apps to a registered, verified developer. The first deadline, September 30, 2026, covers apps from participating stores such as Google Play and Galaxy Store on certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand, and Google says it will expand verification to all apps on certified devices in 2027 (Android Developers). An APK from an anonymous mirror site is exactly what this is designed to stop.
In the meantime, Google Play Protect "checks your device for potentially harmful apps from other sources" (Google Play Help). Keep it switched on, especially if you have ever installed an APK.
If you install an official APK anyway
- Download it only from the app's own domain, reached by typing the address yourself, not from a link in a chat or an ad.
- When Android asks, allow installs from your browser for that one file, then switch the permission off again.
- Check the permissions it asks for. A chat app needs the internet and, for calls, the microphone. It does not need your contacts, SMS or accessibility access.
- Leave Play Protect on and let it scan the app.
- Delete the APK file after installing so it is not reused by accident.

Among the apps we rank, only LusyChat, Muah AI and GirlfriendGPT distribute official APKs, each from its own site. Nomi AI, Kindroid, Replika and Anima are on Google Play, and 18+ apps such as Secrets AI and Candy AI are web apps you install from Chrome.
Is a Candy AI APK safe?
No. Candy AI has no Android app, so any APK using its name comes from a third party and could contain malware. Open candy.ai in Chrome and use Add to Home screen to get the real app.
Do AI girlfriend mod APKs give unlimited tokens?
No. Plans, token balances and the AI itself run on the company's servers, so a modified app cannot create tokens or unlock premium. Mods can, however, steal your login or install malware.
Is there an AI girlfriend APK that works offline?
Not from the apps we rank; all of them need an internet connection because the AI runs on their servers. Offline companions exist only as local AI setups on a computer with a capable graphics card.
