Why the top AI girlfriends are not Discord bots

A Discord bot is a program that reads messages in a server or a DM and posts replies. Getting one to talk like a girlfriend is easy. Running a full companion app inside Discord is not: pictures, video, live calls, long-term memory, character builders and subscriptions all depend on the app's own servers and checkout.

Discord's own rules add a second reason. Its Community Guidelines say users must be 18 or older to see adult sexual content and that server owners must put an age-restricted label on any channel that contains it (Discord Community Guidelines). Bots with age-restricted commands cannot be listed in Discord's App Directory (Discord developer docs). An 18+ companion is a poor fit for those limits.

So the apps we rank split the job. The companion lives on the app's website, where you can pay, set her memory and generate media. Discord is where the company posts updates, runs events and answers questions, and where users swap characters and prompts. That is also why an "official AI girlfriend bot" from a big brand should make you suspicious: none of the apps below offers one.

A community server is still useful before you pay. You can see how the company answers complaints, how often features ship and what people say about price changes, which is more than any sales page tells you.

What each app does on Discord

Linking your Discord account is optional everywhere. It saves typing a password, but it ties the two accounts together, which matters for privacy, as the last section explains.

Community-made AI girlfriend bots: what to check first

Search for an AI girlfriend Discord bot and you will find many made by individuals. Some are harmless hobby projects. Before you add one or talk to one, check four things:

1. Where your messages go. A bot passes everything you type to its owner's server and usually on to an AI provider. Without a privacy policy, assume a stranger can read it.
2. Who else can see the chat. In a server channel, other members and the admins can read every message. Only DMs with the bot are one-to-one, and even those pass through the bot's owner.
3. How it takes money. Bots that sell "premium" through a donation page or a crypto address have no refund policy, no billing support and no company behind them.
4. What permissions it asks for. A chat bot needs to read and send messages. It does not need to manage your server, see your members list or read every channel.

Age checks now apply too. From the week of September 22, 2026, Discord places every account in an adult or teen age group, estimated from signals such as account age and the servers you join, and teen accounts are blocked from age-restricted content and spaces (Discord blog). Discord says more than 90% of users will not be asked to confirm their age; adults placed in the wrong group can confirm it, including with a credit card. Building your own companion bot with the Nomi API

If you want a companion that answers inside Discord, the cleanest official route is Nomi AI's API. Nomi says developers can use it to take a Nomi "into other platforms, apps, and environments" (Nomi blog). You copy an API key from the Integration section of your Profile tab, and the API lets you list your Nomis, send and receive chat messages and use rooms for group conversations (Nomi API docs).

What Nomi does not provide is a ready-made Discord bot. When it launched the API it said there were no integrations yet, so connecting it to Discord means writing or hosting a small bot yourself, or trusting someone else's code with your API key. Treat that key like a password: anyone who has it can talk to your Nomi as you.

Keeping Discord and your AI girlfriend separate

Discord is a social app. Friends can see which servers you share with them, and your username appears on every message you post in a community. Joining an AI girlfriend server under your main account tells people something about you, so consider a separate Discord account for it.

Signing in to an app with Discord links the two accounts, and the app may receive your Discord email address. If you would rather keep them apart, sign up with a separate email instead. The same goes for posting screenshots in a server: crop out your username, your character's name if it is personal, and anything that identifies you.
