Janitor AI is a community roleplay platform run by Janitorai Inc., which lists a Claymont, Delaware address. Its library holds millions of user-made bots, from romantasy and fan fiction to original worlds, and every bot has a scenario field, so you can set the scene before the first message. You bring a persona, pick a bot and write. Bots are tagged Limited for general audiences or Limitless for romantic or adult themes, and the site is 18+ only.
The free plan is the headline. Chats are unlimited on JanitorLLM, its in-house model, and the company says a free option will always stay. Advanced users can also plug in their own API key or proxy to use outside models and pay that provider directly. Janitor+ adds five times the context, priority replies and monthly swipes with its best models, and a web-only Router that uses outside models without a proxy.

Is Janitor AI free? What the free plan includes
Yes. Free users get unlimited chats with millions of bots on the standard JanitorLLM model, with about 9k tokens of context, and the company says a free option will always stay (subscription FAQ). You can create bots and personas and comment on bots.

Bots, personas and scenarios
Janitor AI's strength is its community. Creators publish bots with a personality, a scenario and an opening message, and many use scripted lorebooks and events to track a world. You set a persona for yourself and can swap it between chats. Creators can restrict their bots to accounts at least 30 days old.
The Limited and Limitless tags tell you what a bot is for: Limited bots are for general audiences, Limitless bots have romantic or adult themes (Limited vs Limitless). The rules are strict on minors: minor-coded characters or personas, age regression, real minors and aged-up real people are banned with zero tolerance, even in non-adult bots (minor content policy).
Memory on Janitor AI is context: how much recent conversation the model can see. Free users get about 9k tokens, and Janitor+ gives five times more (chat memory guide). Past that window, characters lose earlier detail, which is why our data rates its memory as conversational. Its help center suggests keeping a short, structured chat memory of key facts, which you write yourself.
Proxies are the other lever. Free users can connect their own API key or a proxy to run outside models, paying the provider per use. Janitor+ adds Router, a web-only option that lets subscribers use third-party models without setting up a proxy or pasting keys (Janitor Router). No pictures or voice
Janitor AI is a text platform. Our data lists no image generation, video, voice messages or calls, and its help center documents none. "Janitor AI image" is a common search, but the images you see on bots are avatars uploaded by creators, not pictures made in chat.

Is Janitor AI safe? Age checks, apps and cancelling
Janitor AI is a legitimate company with a status page, official apps rated 17+ and published help articles. It is 18+ only, bans users it suspects are under 18, and requires a one-time k-ID age check for users in Australia, Brazil and the UK, where Janitor receives only a pass or fail (age verification). The iPhone and Android apps start with adult content switched off until you enable it on the website.
