Joi AI review: a huge catalogue, but you pay per extra
Our Joi AI review scores it 7.8 out of 10, number 19 of the 31 apps we track: a browser app with a large public catalogue of characters, including creator-made digital twins, and long-term memory on Premium. It is hard to recommend as a first paid app, because Premium's price is hidden until you sign up and romantic messages, photos and videos cost Neurons on top.
Joi is built like a marketplace. You browse a large public catalogue of women, men, anime and fantasy characters, plus "digital duplicates" that real creators license through Joi's creator program, and you can build your own. Premium adds unlimited roleplay chat, 50 image generations a month, 5 free videos and advanced memory, and Joi runs one of the more serious age checks in this market, through VerifyMyAge.
The weak points are pricing and extras. Joi does not show Premium's price before you create an account, so we cannot publish one, and a lot of the fun runs on Neurons, its paid currency: up to 120 Neurons to view a photo and up to 1,900 for a video, at a site valuation of about $2 per 100 Neurons. Our data also lists no voice notes, and Joi is closed to UK users for now.
Joi suits people who want variety and do not mind topping up. If you want a clear monthly price and media included, the alternatives below are simpler.

Is Joi free?
Yes, with a thin free tier. The Basic account includes chat and 6 image generations for the life of the account, stored for 7 days. Romantic or explicit messages cost Neurons for free users: 2 each according to the Neurons checkout, or 4 according to the terms, a contradiction Joi has not cleared up.

Characters, creators and custom companions
Variety is Joi's main selling point. The catalogue covers women and men, anime, fantasy, gay, lesbian and trans characters, and "Joi Babes", digital twins of real creators who license their likeness through creator.joi.com after moderation. You can also build your own; Premium includes one free character generation.
Some characters sell Bot Subscriptions, separate paid add-ons for one character that need an active Premium plan. Regular users cannot upload their own content; only verified creators can. Pictures, video and voice
Premium includes 50 image generations a month and 5 free video generations. Beyond that, media runs on Neurons. The terms say viewing a photo costs up to 120 Neurons and a video up to 1,900, depending on the theme, and generating with a specific character uses Neurons rather than free generations. At Joi's own valuation, one top-priced video is roughly $38 in Neurons.
Voice is the gap. Our data lists no voice notes and no live calls for Joi. Premium Plus does advertise a "hands-free voice mode", but Joi does not explain it on the public pages we read. Memory, chat and content rules
Our data lists long-term memory, personas and scenarios for Joi, and Premium lists "advanced memory" and unlimited roleplay chat. That makes it a reasonable pick for ongoing roleplay once you pay.
The content rules are stricter than many rivals in one unusual way: besides the standard bans (minors, exploitation, self-harm, extremism and more), Joi bans political and religious topics in chat. Every message passes an automated safety classifier, and media in the public gallery is reviewed by people. Joi says it runs red-team testing with an independent AI safety partner twice a year. If a safety warning appears mid-chat, that is the classifier at work.
Who runs Joi, privacy and how to cancel
Joi is run by Novi Limited, Aglantzias 62, Nicosia, Cyprus (HE 407352), the same company that publishes the EVA AI Soulmate app. Age checks go through VerifyMyAge, using an email check, facial age estimation or a government ID, and Joi says it does not store ID documents. Joi is currently unavailable in the UK until its age verification system is live there.
The privacy policy says text and voice messages are collected to improve replies and develop its AI, and Microsoft receives session recordings if you consent at registration. If you charge back a payment, Joi says it may disclose your private chats to prove the charge. To cancel, go to Settings, My Subscriptions, choose the plan and tap Cancel renewal, at least 24 hours before billing. Who Joi is for
Joi suits you if you want to browse many characters, including creator twins, and you are happy to pay for extras as you go. It suits you less if you want a known monthly price before signing up, voice, or a plan where photos and video are simply included. UK readers cannot use it at the moment.
