Which AI girlfriend apps work in South Africa
The apps we rank open in a browser from South Africa, and Nomi AI and Replika are listed in the South African App Store, both rated 18+. None of the research files behind our reviews shows a South Africa-specific block or age check by the apps themselves.
The practical issues are cost and connection. Everything outside the App Store bills in US dollars, which makes the rand price move with the exchange rate. And calls and video stream continuously, so they eat mobile data quickly; use Wi-Fi for those, and keep to text on mobile data. To start without paying, see the best free AI girlfriend apps.

Web apps charge in US dollars: Candy AI is $3.99 a month on a yearly plan and Secrets AI $9.17, before your bank converts it and adds any foreign-transaction fee. On these apps, a yearly plan usually costs far less per month than paying month to month, which matters more when the rand is weak.
VAT is 15% (SARS), and foreign suppliers of electronic services above SARS's registration threshold must register for it, so some apps add it at checkout.

Paying from South Africa
In the App Store, Apple accepts most cards, Apple Account balance and mobile billing through MTN, Telkom and Vodacom in South Africa (Apple Support). Mobile billing is useful if you do not want a card involved at all.

What South African law says
South Africa regulates adult content through the Films and Publications Act, enforced by the Film and Publication Board (FPB). Its 2022 regulations let distributors offer X18 films or games online only under an exemption, showing "that children under the age of 18 (eighteen) would not be able to access" them, taking payment by credit card or another child-safe method, and keeping a register of each user's name, address and verified age (FPB). An FPB notice also counts "the failure to take reasonable steps to prevent access" by under-18s as part of distribution (FPB).
Whether AI-generated chat and pictures count as a film, game or publication under the Act has not been tested as far as we can find, and none of the apps we rank publishes a South Africa-specific age check. Your personal data is protected by the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), enforced by the Information Regulator, which takes complaints about how companies handle it (Information Regulator). For other countries, see AI girlfriend laws by country.
Languages
All of the apps we rank work in English, which covers most South African users. None of the site language lists we checked includes Afrikaans, isiZulu or isiXhosa. The AI generally follows the language you write in, so you can try a few messages in Afrikaans on a free plan; Swipey AI says outright that your companion replies in the language you write. Voice features are designed for English on most apps, so non-English voice notes may sound accented. If you want her to use South African slang or mix in Afrikaans words, add one line saying so to her character description on apps that let you edit it.
