PolyBuzz review: is the huge free character app worth paying for?
Our PolyBuzz review in one line: it is worth trying free for its library of more than 20 million characters and chat without sign-up, but paying mainly buys an ad-free app and stronger memory models. It scores 7.3 out of 10, memberships on the US App Store start at $9.90 a month, and its own FAQ admits characters can forget earlier parts of long chats.
PolyBuzz is a general character chat app from Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, which lists a Wilmington, Delaware address. Its pull is scale and ease: more than 20 million user-made characters across anime, film, TV and original stories, character voices you can listen to, a built-in image generator, and free chat that starts without an account. You can also import character cards or JSON files made for other platforms, including Character.AI and TavernAI.
Its rules are split. The public side is moderated: explicit content, hate and self-harm material are screened out of what gets recommended. Its AI girlfriend page says private one-to-one chats are not filtered, which is why many adults use it for spicier roleplay. The terms say it is 18+ only, yet the app also has a Teen Mode, and a parent guide from Qustodio found the web version asked for no birth date at all when it was reviewed.
The weak spots are memory and money. The FAQ admits long chats lose earlier detail, and the fix is a paid tier with stronger memory models. Refund terms are strict and not published on the main site. It is a good free sampler; for a companion that remembers, calls or runs group scenes, the apps in our PolyBuzz alternatives list go further.

Is PolyBuzz free? What the free plan includes
Yes. You can chat with characters for free, with ads, and you do not even need to sign up: guests enter a date of birth and start. Free users can also create characters and, on the web, generate images for free.
What the free plan lacks is comfort. Ad-free use, unlimited voice listening, faster replies that skip the queue and the stronger memory models all need Standard or above. For short chats that is fine; for a story that runs for weeks, the memory gap shows. Our page on whether PolyBuzz is free goes through each limit.
Characters, voices and pictures
The library is the reason people come. PolyBuzz says it has more than 20 million characters, most made by users: anime and manga, movie and TV characters, celebrity and band personas, virtual assistants and original romance stories. Its creation guide lets you build your own, and you can bring in character cards from other apps.
Characters can speak their replies, and members get unlimited voice listening while free users are limited. That is voice playback, not a live call: our data lists no two-way calls. The image generator makes pictures of characters, and the top plan adds Webtoon-style shots. Our data does not list video.
PolyBuzz is unusually frank here. Its FAQ says characters can forget earlier parts of long conversations (PolyBuzz FAQ). The paid tiers answer this with model choice: Standard unlocks the Long Memory model, Premium adds more chat models, and the top plan adds the newest ones, including one called Permanent Memory. Coins can also create memory scenes.
So memory on PolyBuzz is something you buy by tier rather than something the free app does well. Our data rates its memory as long-term on paid models. Apps built around memory, such as Nomi AI and Secrets AI, make it the core of the product instead. Our guide on why AI companions forget explains what context limits do to long chats.
Is PolyBuzz safe? Company, privacy and refunds
PolyBuzz is a real business with app store listings rated 17+ and hundreds of thousands of ratings (App Store, Google Play). Some details are worth knowing:
Two company names. The App Store seller is Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, while the privacy policy's contact address is a Hong Kong company, Singularity Mutual Entertainment Culture Media Limited.
Data sharing. The privacy policy lists sharing with "the Chat-GPT platform", payment providers and ad SDKs such as TopOn, which receive device IDs, IP and location. It says it does not sell user information.
Refunds. The terms say a completed purchase is not refunded without due reason, even if you later cancel (terms of use).
Our Is PolyBuzz safe? guide covers age checks, deletion and the Qustodio findings in full.
How to cancel PolyBuzz
Cancel where you paid. In the iPhone app, go to Settings, your Apple ID, Subscriptions, PolyBuzz, Cancel. On Android, open the Play Store, Subscriptions, PolyBuzz, Cancel. For a web membership, PolyBuzz points you to Settings, then Help Center. Your benefits run to the end of the paid period.
Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Our guide on how to cancel PolyBuzz also covers refunds and deleting your account.
Who PolyBuzz suits, and who should skip it
Pick PolyBuzz if you want to try thousands of fandom characters for free, like listening to character voices, or want a polished phone app. Its free plan is one of the easiest ways into character chat.
Skip it if you want a companion that remembers a long story without paying for a higher tier, if you want live calls or group scenes, or if clear refund rules matter to you. Adults who want those usually move to an 18+ companion app: Candy AI (8.3) for a big curated roster with pictures, Nomi AI (8.2) for memory, or Selira AI (8.2) for free unlimited text chat. See Candy AI vs PolyBuzz and Character AI vs PolyBuzz for side-by-side verdicts.

Frequently asked questions
Is PolyBuzz legit?
Yes. PolyBuzz is sold on the App Store by Cloud Whale Interactive Technology LLC, which lists a Wilmington, Delaware address, and its terms are governed by Delaware law. It has millions of store reviews, published terms and a privacy policy.
How much does PolyBuzz cost?
Chat is free with ads. On the US App Store, Standard costs $9.90 a month, Premium $19.90 and the top plan $29.90. Coins are sold separately for extra voice time, rerolls and memory scenes.
Is PolyBuzz free?
Yes. You can chat free, even without signing up, and create characters. Ads stay on, voice playback is limited, and the stronger memory models need a membership.
Is PolyBuzz safe?
It is a legitimate app with 17+ store ratings, but it shares device and location data with ad partners, its refund terms are strict, and a Qustodio review found weak age checks on the web. Keep personal details out of chats.
How do I cancel PolyBuzz?
Cancel in the store you paid through: Apple ID Subscriptions on iPhone or Google Play Subscriptions on Android. For a web membership, use Settings, then Help Center. Benefits last to the end of the paid period.
Does PolyBuzz allow NSFW?
Its AI girlfriend page says private one-to-one chats are not filtered, while public content is screened and explicit material is banned from public pages. The terms say users must be 18 or over.
Does PolyBuzz remember conversations?
Only partly. Its FAQ admits characters can forget earlier parts of long chats. Paid tiers unlock stronger memory models, including Long Memory on Standard and a Permanent Memory model on the top plan.
